UPDATE: Following an earlier statement from the City of Springfield indicating that no foul play was suspected in the alleged kidnapping incident on Memorial Boulevard, Smokey Barn News has now confirmed that the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation has taken over the case.

“I can confirm that we have been requested by District Attorney General Robert Nash to investigate the alleged abduction that took place Saturday night at a parking lot on Springfield’s Memorial Boulevard,” said Carley Gordon, Deputy Communications Director for the TBI. “The investigation remains active and ongoing.”

Smokey Barn News has also learned that the TBI has been scouring surveillance video from local businesses.

This development marks a significant shift in the investigation’s trajectory. Initially, local authorities suggested that the incident did not involve foul play, but the TBI’s involvement indicates a deeper probe into the circumstances surrounding the alleged abduction. The TBI’s expertise and resources will be instrumental in uncovering the facts of the case. As the investigation progresses, further details are expected to emerge, shedding light on the events that transpired that evening.

SPRINGFIELD, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – Springfield Police say they do not suspect foul play following a report of a possible abduction in the parking lot near Goodwill in Springfield on Saturday night.

According to Zachary Clark, Public Affairs Coordinator for the City of Springfield, “We received a call Saturday evening, 5/31/2025, in reference to a possible abduction in the parking lot of 2008 Memorial Boulevard. While we are still investigating, we have received no reports of anyone missing and the investigation does not suggest at this time that any foul play was present with the individuals involved.”

Smokey Barn News first reported the incident after receiving a high volume of inquiries from the public.

The 911 call came in at 9:39 p.m., with witnesses estimating that the incident occurred around 9:36 p.m.

One witness told Smokey Barn News that at least four individuals observed what appeared to be a young female being taken by individuals in a van — possibly with other vehicles involved in a coordinated effort.

If you were in the area Saturday night — particularly near Goodwill, Papa John’s, or Elmo’s — and have dash cam or surveillance footage that may have captured the parking lot around that time, it may assist investigators. Video or photos may be submitted to Smokey Barn News at 615-513-9844.

At the moment, though, no video or photographic evidence has surfaced capturing the incident.
