There were three men with guns standing at the door, and all of them (including the resident) began shooting, witnesses told police.

According to Springfield Police Chief David Thompson, it appears that Whitherspoon was one of the three men involved in the robbery on Childress Street and since the round was retrieved from Whitherspoon, a ballistics test should confirm he was shot by the victim.
It is not likely that the victim will face any charges, Thompson said.
According to Thompson, Five people (including a 7-year-old child) were in the home during the robbery but no one in the home was injured.
“Robberies matching this same pattern targeting Hispanics in our community have been occurring with some frequency in the last two years, we believe this robbery is tied to them,” Thompson Said.
