Tractor Trailer Hauling Appliances Overturns On Hwy 49

UPDATE: Hwy 49 is now open. Crews continued until 3:30am Friday morning to clear the wreck and re-open the road before rush hour.

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A tractor trailer hauling appliances has overturned on Hwy 49 just outside Springfield and officials say it will likely be hours until the roadway is fully open.

The wreckage is positioned just past Wilks Rd on Hwy 49 before the curve off the right shoulder of the roadway. MAP

The call came into 911 at 7:22pm. Hwy 49 is down to one lane and will likely close completely periodically throughout the evening and perhaps into the morning as officials offload the cargo, remove the rig and clean up diesel fuel.

The rig, hauling appliances from Electrolux, left the roadway and tipped over falling down an embankment. As the rig tipped over, it took a utility pole and lines with it. Though the utility pole snapped in half, the lines appear to be intact and CEMC told Smokey Barn News that power lines are not effected though neighbors told us the power did flicker momentarily. Though the rig is destroyed, the driver somehow escaped uninjured.

Officials with the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency told Smokey Barn News that at the moment there seems to be some kind of a hold up getting AT&T to the scene. Officials need AT&T to move the lines so workers can start pulling the rig to the roadway. It’s looking like the clean up could go well into the morning.

The Tennessee Highway Patrol is in charge of the investigation. The THP, the Robertson County Emergency Management Agency, Robertson County EMS, Cross Plains Fire, the Robertson County Sheriff’s Office and CEMC all responded to the scene.

Smokey Barn News will follow this story through the evening and bring you updates as they become available.
