Trains Halted After Two Fires Along R/R-Tracks In Greenbrier
GREENBRIER TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) –Firefighters from three cities battled two separate fires along side the railroad tracks Wednesday. One fire was located near Industrial Blvd and Old Greenbrier Pike MAP and the other near Kelly Willis RD. MAP The first call came in to 911 at 4:22 p.m.
The fire near Old Greenbrier Pike was about 1000 feet long and the fire near Kelly Willis Rd by Atwood Mobile Products was a about 250 feet long. According to Greenbrier Fire Chief Kyle Hamill, firefighters from Greenbrier, Ridgetop and Springfield put about a thousand gallons of water on both fires. Due to the close proximity of the fires to the tracks, CSX Railroad stopped the trains.
Both fires were actually in the brush along side of the tracks. Hamill told Smokey Barn News that the weather has been very dry creating hazardous conditions for brush fires. Firefighters were leaning towards the trains as the cause of today’s fires. “The trains can create sparks that ignite the brush along the tracks,” Hamill said.
Some of the pine trees along the tracks were a concern to firefighters. Once ignited pine trees can produce a large fireball and Hamill was concerned that if they did ignite there was a risk of the fire leaping over to near by structures. Fortunately the fires were contained quickly. Hamill said that all three firefighting teams did a great job and Greenbrier Police helped out tremendously as firefighters isolated the exact locations of the fires and how big they were.
