Two Injured in Serious Head-On Crash In Springfield
REPORT UPDATED
SPRINGFIELD, TENNESSEE (SMOKEY BARN NEWS): Two people, including a child, were injured following a serious head-on crash between an SUV and a Walmart tractor-trailer in Springfield on Sunday afternoon.
The crash occurred on Fifth Avenue at Smith Street, about a mile from the Robertson County Detention Facility, the first call coming into 911 at 3:43 p.m.
The impact left the driver pinned inside the vehicle, and it was clear she was in pain. The Springfield Fire Department extricated her, and both she and the child were transported to an area hospital. An update on their condition was not immediately available. The driver of the tractor-trailer was not injured.
If you look at the side of the cargo unit (the box) of the tractor-trailer, there appears to be a wrinkle in the forward section. If connected, that would suggest a serious impact.
Fortunately, modern vehicles are equipped with crumple-zone technology, effectively turning the front of cars into collapsible structures that absorb crash energy. Vehicles today often look worse after a crash because of this technology; it’s all designed to protect the occupants. For the sake of the occupants of this crash, we’ll just hope the technology did its job.
The Tennessee Highway Patrol is leading the ongoing investigation. Fifth Avenue remained closed for several hours while the THP investigated and the scene was cleared. Chosen Towing removed the SUV.
As soon as we have an update on the condition of the occupants of the SUV and the cause of the crash, we will bring it to you.
UPDATE: According to a preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol, a 2007 Chevy Trailblazer traveling westbound on 5th Avenue crossed the center line into the eastbound lane, where it collided head-on with a 2024 Freightliner tractor-trailer pulling a cargo trailer.
The driver of the SUV, 45-year-old Amanda Didonato, was injured in the crash and is facing charges of Due Care and Child Restraints pending the outcome of the investigation.
A 7-year-old passenger was also injured, according to the report. The semi driver, a 34-year-old man, was not injured, and no charges have been filed against him. The investigation remains ongoing.
According to Robertson County EMS, both occupants sustained serious injuries; however, their injuries were not considered life-threatening.
