Collapsing Building Prompts Closure of Adjacent Business In Springfield

SPRINGFIELD TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – A Springfield business has been closed by the Fire Department over concerns that a condemned neighboring building may continue to collapse.

A large portion of the building, formally the home to a gun shop at 903 South Main Street, MAP collapsed during the high winds we had on Wednesday evening. The collapse caused heavy damage to a business next door.  At least one vehicle and a transport trailer were totaled and several other vehicles were damaged by falling bricks in the collapse. A large mobile trailer was also damaged.

Soap Brothers, a popular detail and used tire shop, is located right next door to the condemned structure. Springfield Fire Chief Jimmy Hamill told Smokey Barn News that his concern is that the remainder of the building could come down right on top of the adjacent business.

Chief Hamill informed the City Manager that it’s just too dangerous for Soap Brothers to occupy the business until the old gun store is either torn down or the owner of the property can find a structural engineer that can somehow convince the city that the rest of the building won’t come down.  On January 15 the Springfield Board of Mayor and Aldermen agreed to allocate funds to demolish the building if the current owner didn’t bring it down.

Reportedly, the roughly 16,000 square foot building was built in 1900 and in 2011 it was condemned after part of the roof caved in.

Harold “Gene” Mcghee, the owner of Soap Brothers, is waiting for someone to tell him when he can reopen. Mcghee told Smokey Barn News that he has worked very hard to build up his business at that location over the last couple of years and now he has to send customers away. See video for our interview with Mcghee.
