Driver Rescued After Semi Careens Off I65 Bridge Into River

ROBERTSON COUNTY: (Smokey Barn News) – I65 in Robertson County is still recovering after multiple wrecks, including one involving a tractor-trailer that careened off a bridge into the Red River. MAP

According to Robertson County EMS Director Brent Dyer, multiple reports of vehicle accidents have kept first responders busy overnight on I-65. Drivers traveling I-65 this morning, Thursday, Jan 19th, should expect delays near the 117-mile marker (Hwy 52/Portland exit). One accident was first dispatched at 1:24 am, reporting a semi had left the roadway at a construction entrance and went off into the Red River. Extrication of the driver took about 1.5 hours. The driver was transported to Skyline Medical Center trauma center in stable condition, but as a “trauma alert” due to mechanism, speed and cold water exposure.

Continue to expect delays and use caution if you plan to use I65. Another crash occurred at the 118-mile marker involving semi carrying hazardous materials at 2:45 AM. No major injuries came from this crash, however, traffic delays remain in this area.

Incredible teamwork by all responders who helped rescue the driver of the semi from the river. “Thank you to our fire department, EMA and law enforcement colleagues, THP, as well as the tow truck operators and TDOT personnel who helped.”
