Following Trump’s Urging, Congressman Green Say’s “Ok I’m In”
ROBERTSON COUNTY TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – On February 14th Rep. Mark Green said “I have come to realize our fight is not here within Washington, our fight is with Washington.” followed by an announcement that he will not seek reelection. FULL STORY In a statement released to Smokey Barn News just days later, Green’s office confirmed that he was reconsidering a run after all. FULL STORY Following encouragement from advocates like Senator Kerry Roberts of Tennessee FULL STORY and President Donald Trump, Green said “Ok I’m in.”
“While my strong desire was to leave Congress at the end of this year, since my announcement, I have received countless calls from constituents, colleagues, and President Trump urging me to reconsider,” said Congressmen Mark Green in a statement released to Smokey Barn News Thursday. “I was reminded of the words of General McArthur on a statue at West Point: “Duty, honor, country.” I realized once again: I had a duty to my country to fulfill. I will be running for re-election so I can be here on Day 1 next year to help President Trump end this border crisis once and for all.”
Back on the 14th Green (in his retirement announcement) said, “At the start of the 118th Congress, I promised my constituents to pass legislation to secure our borders and to hold Secretary Mayorkas accountable. Today, with the House having passed H.R. 2 and Secretary Mayorkas impeached, it is time for me to return home. In the last few months, in reading the writings of our Framers, I was reminded of their intent for representatives to be citizen-legislators, to serve for a season and then return home. Our country–and our Congress–is broken beyond most means of repair. I have come to realize our fight is not here within Washington, our fight is with Washington. As I have done my entire life, I will continue serving this country–but in a new capacity.” Green’s full statement can be read here.
Having first been elected to Congress in 2018, Congressman Green served as the Freshman Class President in the 116th Congress. At the beginning of the 118th Congress, Green was selected as Chairman of the House Committee on Homeland Security, becoming the only member of Congress to be selected at the start of his or her third term to chair a major legislative committee this century.
So far, only former Nashville Mayor Megan Barry has pulled papers to run.
