Former Portland Mayor Dan Jenkins Has Died, He was 80

PORTLAND TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – His service to the Portland Community spanned more than 50 years. He was a member of the Portland City Council (twice) and served as Mayor of the City of Portland from 1997 to 2001.  Dan Jenkins has died, he was 80.

According to his online obituary, Jenkins felt his greatest accomplishment during his term as Mayor was the development of the Richland Park Complex. MAP

Dan Morgan Jenkins lived in Portland, Tennessee but was born on July 18th, 1940 in Jackson County, Tennessee. In February of 2000, the Tennessee state legislature issued a resolution to honor Jenkins upon his receipt of the Outstanding Mayor of the Year Award.

“It is fitting that this General Assembly should pay tribute to those exemplary professionals who have dedicated their careers to making the lives of others a better experience,” the resolution reads. “Mayor Dan Jenkins is most assuredly one such remarkable person who is deserving of special recognition.

“The good people of Portland and Sumner County have long recognized and appreciated Mayor Jenkins’ talent; and WHEREAS, he also demonstrates his proficiency as a businessman and communicator through his business, Dan’s Furniture and Appliance, which he has owned since 1965; and WHEREAS, in addition to his service as mayor, he has also served with probity as charter president of the Portland Jaycees, as a member of the Portland Industrial Development Board, which he chaired for 10 years, as president of Dogwood Hills Country Club, as Director of Portland Chamber of Commerce, and as a sponsor and coach of a Portland Little League Baseball team for 34 years; and WHEREAS, Mr. Jenkin’s activity in his community is evidenced through his membership in the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church.”

Jenkins died at the Hendersonville Medical Center on December 29th, 2020. Jenkins was one of 10 children. He married Charlotte Faye Kirkham in 1960 at Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church. Dan and Charlotte were married 60 years and 13 days on the day he died.

Jenkins is survived by his wife, two sons, grandchildren, and one great-granddaughter.  Dan graduated from Sumner County High School in 1958 and owned & operated Dan’s Furniture and Appliance for 37 years.

Dan had a passion for service to his community and church. He professed salvation and joined Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in August 1962. During this time, he served as church treasurer, trustee, Pleasant Hill committee member, adult Sunday School teacher, and one of the church’s song leaders.

Funeral services were held on January 2nd, 2021 at Wilkinson & Wiseman Funeral Home. Jenkins was laid to rest at the Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church Cemetery.
