House Destroyed After Jeep Catches Fire in Garage—Multiple Agencies Respond
SHACKLE ISLAND, TENNESSEE – A Shackle Island home was destroyed by fire Tuesday afternoon after a Jeep parked in the garage caught fire, according to Shackle Island Fire Chief Ron Wills.
The home is located on New Shackle Island Rd near Old Shackle Island Rd in the Shackle Island area. LOCATION OF FIRE
According to Chief Wills, the homeowner had just arrived, parked the Jeep in the garage, and brought groceries inside. When they returned to move the vehicle, the engine caught fire. The flames quickly spread to the home, and despite an extensive response from multiple fire departments, the house was declared a total loss.
Fire crews received the call around noon and remained on scene for a good part of the day. Responding agencies included:
- Shackle Island Fire Department
- Number One Volunteer Fire Department
- White House Community Volunteer Fire Department+
- Cotton Town Fire Department
- Millersville Fire Department
- Highland Volunteer Fire Department
- Oak Grove Fire Department
Emergency personnel from Sumner EMS and the Sumner County Sheriff’s Office were also on scene.
Chief Wills noted that once the fire breached the attic—particularly the bonus room above the garage—it became extremely difficult to contain. “Heat rises, and once it got into the attic, it ran left and right the entire length of that whole home,” he said. “And at that point, we took a defensive posture and got all of our people out of the building, and just did our best to contain it. Unfortunately, we didn’t win, the fire did.”
Thankfully, no injuries were reported among the homeowners or firefighters.
“We just got back to the fire station (7:30 pm) so we were there almost eight hours. The guys are coming down here to Waffle House to get a bit to eat, everybody missed lunch and dinner,” Chief Wills said.
“We had a great showing, particularly for a volunteer department in the middle of the week on a work day,” Wills said. “The crews did everything they could, but unfortunately, we just didn’t win against this fire. The important thing is that everyone made it out safely.”
