Obituary for Roger Leslie Vaughn

Roger Leslie Vaughn, age 80, of White House passed away Wednesday, January 3, 2024, surrounded by family.

Roger’s wish was to be cremated. A visitation will be held for family and friends on Friday, January 26, 2024, from 5-7 pm at White House First United Methodist Church.

Roger was born and raised in Nashville, TN to the late Leslie & Lulu Vaughn. As a young boy, Roger became an Eagle Scout and a member of the Civil Air Patrol. He joined the US Army where he served in the rost Airborne as well as completing Ranger school.

Roger married the love of his life, Barbara Gragg, and had two children together. He and Barbara were avid NASCAR fans and enjoyed racing go carts. He was part of the motor corp. and the clown unit in the Almenah Shrine. He and Barbara enjoyed time at the lake and trips to Cancun. He won several trophies from water skiing competitions.floral square

Roger enjoyed flying and obtained his private pilot license. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his son, Roger “Ricky” Vaughn. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Barbara Vaughn, daughter Teresa Murphy, grandchildren; Brandon Head, Eric Head, Austin Head, and Morgan Vaughn, great- grandchildren; Bailey Head, Xander Head, and Kennedy Head.

Obituary for Sandra Nell Herring

Sandra Nell Herring, age 74 of White House passed away Sunday, January 14, 2024 at Skyline Medical Center. She was born February 7, 1949 in Boulder City, NV to Robert & Marion Stuart Jones. She managed their family owned carpet cleaning business until her retirement. She was voted Miss Teen USA when she was younger. Sandee enjoyed cooking and playing with the grandchildren. She also loved dancing and teaching ballet.

She is survived by her loving husband of almost 56 years, Sid Herring, White House, TN; son, Sidney Allen (Vicki) Herring, Jr., Bell Buckle, TN; daughter, Halley (Landen) Lamberth, White House, TN; 4 grandchildren, Brooke (Jaymie) Stafford, Katie Herring, Layton Lamberth and Lincoln Lamberth; one great-grandchild, Saylor Stafford.

A Celebration of Life Gathering is planned for Wednesday, February 7, 2024 from 12pm -2pm at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in White House.

Obituary for Pam Elliott 

Pamela Sue Elliott, 64, of Springfield, passed away on Sunday January 14, 2024, at her home.

Her remains will be cremated, and a Memorial Service will be held at a future date.

Pam was born June 30, 1959, in Ashland City, to the late William Odell and Rosetta Bugg Elliott. She attended Coopertown Elementary School and Springfield High School. Pam was employed at Acme Boot and Holly Carburetor until both businesses closed in Springfield. She has since worked as a caregiver for the elderly, and was a member of Battle Creek Baptist Church. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by brothers: Deland and Ray Dean Elliott, by her sister: Brenda King, and by her brother-in-law: Chuck McBride.

Jimmy Dorris Obituary

Jimmy F. Dorris, 88, of Greenbrier, passed from this life on Friday January 12, 2024, at his home that he was also born in.

Funeral services will be conducted Saturday January 20th at 1:00 p.m. at the Greenbrier United Methodist Church with Dr. Jason Wilkerson officiating. Interment will follow in Springfield Memorial Gardens with Dale Krisle, Ross Pendergrass, Austin Pendergrass, Tyler Pendergrass, Zach Reasoner, Jeremy Hunter, Bart Krisle, and Barry Pendergrass serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers will be Ivan Bell, David Williams, and Will Ed Osborne. The family will receive friends on Saturday January 20th from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the Greenbrier United Methodist Church.

Mr. Jimmy was born February 12, 1935, in Greenbrier, to the late William Smith and Myrtle Hackney Dorris. He was a graduate of Greenbrier High School Class of 1953, and was a lifelong member of Greenbrier United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed being a part of the JOY group. Mr. Jimmy was a retired mail carrier for the U.S. Postal Service, but his love was farming, and he enjoyed spending his lifetime being on his farm, milking cows, raising tobacco, and doing everything that a farmer does. He was a member of the ASCS Board of Directors for forty years, and he loved playing dominos. In addition to working on his farm, the highlight of his life was spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his siblings: Willa Ann O’Rear, Dorothy Clinard, Reba Matthews, William Smith Dorris, Jr., Charlie F. Dorris, and Mac Dorris.

Mr. Jimmy is survived by his wife, Melba Moulton Dorris, whom he would be married to for 65 years in August of this year, by his daughters and sons-in-law: Kim and Bart Krisle of Greenbrier, and Kelly and Barry Pendergrass of Greenbrier, by his grandchildren: Dale (Lacye) Krisle, Ross (Danielle) Pendergrass, Joanna (Zach) Reasoner, Austin Pendergrass, Tyler (Shelbi) Pendergrass, and Jamie Leigh (Jeremy) Hunter, and by 8 great grandchildren.

Russell “Russ” Burchett Obituary

Russell Owen “Russ” Burchett, age 92 of Springfield, TN, passed from this life on Monday, January 8, 2024 at Vanderbilt Medical Center.

Memorial services were conducted Saturday, January 13, 2024 at 1:00 PM at Hillcrest Church of Christ with Bro. Marvin Crouch officiating. The family received friends from 9 AM until the time of service.

Russ was born January 21, 1931 in Keysburg, KY to the late Artis and Cleoh Jaynes Burchett. He was a member of Hillcrest Church of Christ and was a retired realtor, auctioneer, and farmer. He spent his spare time golfing, fishing, and watching University of Kentucky basketball. He enjoyed music and dancing. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a daughter, Sherrie Weinstein, and his sister, Geraldine Campbell.

Obituary for Marc Andrew Garner

Marc Andrew Garner, age 56 of White House went home to be with the Lord Saturday, January 13, 2024 at his home, surrounded by loving friends and family. He was born August 30, 1967 in Livingston, TN to Elbert O. & Fay Story Garner, Mark was a member of White House Church of Christ, where he served on the AV Team. He was a lifelong Darrell Waltrip fan and enjoyed NASCAR. He loved visiting the beach, running, exercising and spending time with his friends. Mark has shown the most positive Christian attitude, during adversity, over the years and has been a witness in his Christian faith to all who knew him.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Fay Garner; wife, Teresa Garner; daughter, Kelsey Garner; son, Nicholas Garner. He is survived by his father, Elbert Garner, Franklin, TN; girlfriend, Cindy Carson, Gladeville, TN; brother, Gary (Sharon) Garner, Murfreesboro, TN.

Obituary for Kristine Garrett

Kristine Marie Garrett, age 56, of Ashland City, Tennessee, died Thursday, January 11, 2024, at her home.

Funeral services will be conducted at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Pleasant View at 1:00PM on Saturday, January 20th, with Bro. James Hayes officiating.

Following the funeral service, her remains will be cremated.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, January 19th from 12:00 noon until 3:00PM and 5:00PM until 8:00PM and again on Saturday at the funeral home from 11:00AM until the hour of service at 1:00PM.

Kristine was born on October 7, 1967 in Poughkeepsie, New York, to the late William & Helen Hoyt Johnson, Sr. She was previously employed by Gaylord Opryland Resort and Convention Center as a convention service manager then later became a wife and homemaker. She was a member of Pleasant View church of Christ.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her brother, William R. Johnson, Jr.

Obituary for Ralph Hitchcock

Joseph “Ralph” Hitchcock, Sr., age 91, of Cedar Hill, Tennessee, died Wednesday, January 10, 2024, at the Residence at Alive Hospice in Nashville.

Funeral services will be held at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Pleasant View at 11:00AM on Thursday, January 18th, with Bobby Clay Riley and Dr. Fred Nordquist conducting. Burial will follow at 1:00PM in Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Nashville with Derek Rozanski, Steve McCurdy, Casey Coble, Sammy Bryant, Buddy Bryant, and William Simmons serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 9:30AM until the hour of service at 11:00AM.

Mr. Hitchcock was born on December 24, 1932, in Ettrick, Virginia, to the late Garland Hitchcock and Sadie Hitchcock Whitt & husband Walter. He held many jobs, but was most proud of working for U.S. Customs which he retired from in 1996. He proudly served his country in the United States Air Force and was a Mason and remains a member of Petersburg’s Blandford Lodge #3 Ancient Free and Accepted Masons and the Scottish Rite Masons of the Valley of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Martha Rider Johnson, age 85, of Greenbrier, passed away Tuesday, January 9, 2024 at Skyline Medical Center in Nashville.

Mrs. Johnson’s wishes were to be cremated, and there are no services planned at this time.

Mrs. Johnson was born January 10, 1938 in Greensboro, GA to the late Roland and Ruthie Bell Weaver Rider. She worked as an assembler until her retirement at Peterbilt and was a member of Ebenezer Baptist Church. Mrs. Johnson loved animals, gardening, anything outdoors, and she was a “foodie”.

In addition to her parents Mrs. Johnson is preceded in death by her husband, Jerry Johnson, brothers, John Rider, Wallace Rider and Lee Ingram, sisters, Myrtle Burrell and Lelia Ingram, and daughters, Betty Cleek, Vickey Davis, and Sherin Overbey.

Obituary for Ron Mason

Ronald “Ron” Lee Mason, age 95, of Chapmansboro, Tennessee, died Tuesday, January 9, 2024, at his home.

A memorial service was held at 11:00AM on Saturday, January 13th, at Sycamore Chapel church of Christ with Darrell Binkley officiating.

Mr. Mason was born on May 9, 1928, in Gordonsville, Tennessee, to the late Walter & Frankie Gregson Mason. He was a veteran of the United States Army and then worked for the Ford Glass Plant retiring after 35 years of service. Mr. Mason had many talents and hobbies including photography, basket weaving, flying lessons, gardening, operating a ham radio, and sign painting, which he did for the Army as well as for local organizations. He was a very active, longtime member of the church of Christ at Sycamore Chapel.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Peggy Mason; and brother, Robert Mason.

He is survived his son, John (Jennifer) Mason; daughters, Jennifer (Chuck) Pace, Maggie Mason, Katie Mason, and Laura (David) Evans; grandchildren, Meredith (Jess) Landon, Hank Edison, Logan Edison, Mason Evans, Lena Mason, and Laura Mason; and great-grandchildren, Tucker and Bryce Landon.

Obituary for Joseph “Joe” Dew, Sr.

Joseph “Joe” Edward Dew Sr. April 30, 1934 — January 7, 2024. Springfield, Tennessee — Joseph Edward Dew Sr. passed away at TriStar NorthCrest Medical Center on Sunday afternoon, Jan. 7, 2024. His wife and daughter were at his bedside. He was 89.

Joe was born April 30,1934 in Dayton, Kentucky to William Waldo Dew and Thelma Dittus Dew.

He grew up there playing on the streets of the small town. He met and married the love of his life, Charleen Genevieve Testerman, in his hometown. And the two of them used Dayton as a launch pad for a life that led them in 1969 to Springfield.

Joe had studied industrial engineering at the University of Louisville and later finished his undergraduate degree at Trevecca Nazarene University in Nashville.

In Springfield, Joe became the plant superintendent at Southern Heel Co. and later stepped up to become the general manager at Vulcan Corp. in Clarksville, Tennessee. He left Vulcan in 1992 and spent a few years as director of operations for Datrek, a local maker of golf bags and accessories.

Joe spent most of his faith life at Oakland Baptist Church where he served in a variety of roles including deacon, treasurer and Sunday school teacher.

After he retired, Joe and Charleen spent a lot of their time traveling to explore the Southwest and to learn more history about Native Americans, a real passion for Joe. They also took time to visit grandchildren, and later great grandchildren, in Jackson, Tennessee; Benton, Kentucky; and Raleigh, North Carolina.

Joe is survived by Charleen, his wife of 68 years. His two sons, Joseph Dew Jr. (wife Myra Teasley) of Morrisville, NC., and Mark T. Dew (wife Sylvia Dew) of Jackson, Tennessee; daughter, Toni Dew of Springfield; sister Naomi Dew Melia of Batesville, Ind.; granddaughters Amanda Dew Smith (and husband Clayton) of Jackson and Chasity Mann Sink (and husband James) of Clarksville; and grandsons Brian J. Dew (and wife Hannah) of Benton, Ky., and Bryson H. Dew, of Morrisville, NC.

Survivors also include five great-grandsons and two great-granddaughters. His brother, William W. Dew Jr. , passed away in Sacramento, CA., in 2010.

Obituary for Shirley Adams 

Shirley Jean Ramsey Adams, age 87 of Greenbrier, passed from this life on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at her home.

Funeral services were conducted Friday, January 12, 2024 at 1:00 PM in the Oakhurst Chapel of Robertson County Funeral Home with Pastor Donnie Bryant and Bro. Gary Dillard officiating. Burial followed in Springfield Memorial Gardens with Cole Adams, Mark Ramsey, Mike Ramsey, Martin Schmidt, Brian Schmidt, and Darrell Thaxton serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were Maleque Hudson and Lance Starks. The family received friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4 until 8 PM and Friday from 10 AM until the hour of service.

Ms. Shirley was born July 15, 1936 in Adairville, KY to the late Hobert Lee and Ethel Pearson Ramsey. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and was retired from Acme Boot with 30 years of service. She later worked at Wal-Mart in the break bar. She loved all of her family and enjoyed farm life. She was hard working, enjoyed working in her flower garden and enjoyed arts and crafts, painting, and doing jigsaw puzzles.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by a grandson, Codie Adams; a great granddaughter, Kelsey Thaxton; brothers, Hobert Lee Ramsey, Jr. and R.C. Ramsey; and sisters, Frances Schmidt, Helen Kennedy, and Nancy Wilks Brown.

Obituary for Ethel Lynn Spiller

Ethel L. Spiller passed away peacefully on Jan. 6, 2024 at the age of 94 at The Waters nursing home in Springfield TN. She was born in the Mount Sharon community on April 6, 1929. Her parents were Thomas Alfred Crutcher and Ethelea Binkley Crutcher.

Ethel graduated from Coopertown High School and attended Draughon’s Business College in Nashville for one year before going to Washington, DC to work for the the Dept. of the Navy. While in Washington she met and married Clyde R. Spiller, who was serving in the Navy. After Clyde’s retirement in 1963, the family returned to Robertson County, built a home, and farmed for many years.

Although Ethel described herself as a clerical worker, she enjoyed many varied jobs and volunteer opportunities in her lifetime. In 1967 she began to serve in the Veterans’ Administration, working her way up to the position of adjudicator. She later became a veterans’ advocate at AMVETS.

Upon retirement she became active in the community in significant ways. She organized a successful legal fight against an illegal landfill on Highway 49. She also promoted the creation of North Crest Hospital in Springfield. These activities led to her effort to incorporate the city of Coopertown. She was elected the first mayor of Coopertown in 1996.

floral squareShe is preceded in death by her husband Clyde R. Spiller and son Andrew W. Spiller, as well as siblings J.T. Crutcher, Travis Crutcher, Evelyn Fann, and Stanley Crutcher. She is survived by her children, James Spiller (Elsa), Ray Spiller (Carol), and Dory Hudspeth, as well as grandchildren and great grandchildren.

In lieu of flowers the family asks donations be made to the building fund at Mt. Sharon Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Obituary for Thomas Lynn Saladin

Thomas Lynn Saladin, age 73, of Greenbrier, passed away Saturday, January 6, 2024, at TriStar NorthCrest Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted at 1pm Saturday, January 13th in the chapel of Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Greenbrier with Bro. Randy Harmon and Bro. Pete Darnell officiating. Burial followed in the Rock Springs Baptist Church Cemetery.

The family received friends from 11am until time of the service at 1pm Saturday at the funeral home.

Tom was born December 26, 1950, in Princeton, Indiana to the late Juste and Talma Bryan Saladin. He surrendered his life to God at an early age. In his teenage years, he was often found at the local jail witnessing to inmates. As did his siblings, Tom played the trumpet. It was not only his love of music but a ministry tool as he was sought after locally to play Taps at the graveside of funerals for veterans and often played it in church services. He attended Bob Jones University in Greenville, South Carolina where he received his Master of Divinity. Afterwards, Tom was Ordained as a Baptist Minister and over the next several years he served as a Christian Day School Teacher and Pastor in both Wyoming and Colorado. He then made a move to Madison, Tennessee where he worked at Triumph Aerostructures building airplane wings for the C-130 and later the Osprey. He moved to Greenbrier to be with his wife, Cindy, in 1994. Tom was a member of Rock Springs Baptist Church. He retired in 2007 due to multiple health issues. He had a beautiful tenor voice and used this gift in choirs and as a soloist for much of his life. Tom loved his family deeply; however, God was his first love. He was active in serving his Lord in the form of leading Bible studies at Rock Springs and worship service on Sundays for a local nursing home until his health prevented him continuing. He loved going out to eat and short excursions with his wife and later in life could often be found with a good audio book or watching documentaries of all sorts.

In addition to his parents, Tom was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kariann Hummel, son-in-law, Mark Hummel, father-in-law, Vardell Rawls, and a brother-in-law, Bob McDaniel.

Obituary for Brenda Kay Bilbrey

Brenda Kay Bilbrey, 72, born April 1st, 1951, of White House, TN, passed away at home peacefully with family on January 5th, 2024. Brenda was the 8th of 9 children born unto William Benton Winkler and Tera Boyd Winkler of Madison County, Alabama.

Brenda was a member of the Body of Christ and a member of Pleasant Grove Methodist Church. She was a very talented and astounding artist and loved to paint. She was a loving wife, a wonderful mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend to many. She retired from the State of Tennessee where she served as an administrative assistant.

She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Naomi Winkler Maxwell, Freda Winkler Hill, and Charles Benton Winkler. .Brenda is survived by her husband of over 52 years, Timothy Bilbrey, son Charles Damon Bilbrey (Kim), grandchildren Dawson Bilbrey (Lacey), Ava Bilbrey (Jackson), and Wyatt Bilbrey, as well as great-grandchildren Desmond and Delilah Bilbrey. Sisters Jean Winkler Kopzcynski (John), Betty Ann Winkler Hunter (Joe). Brothers Foster Winkler (Nancy), Bobby Winkler, and Ronnie Winkler and many nieces and nephews whom she loved so much.

Obituary for Michael Mason

Michael Aaron Mason, 40, of Greenbrier, passed away on Wednesday January 3, 2024, at his home.

There was a time of visitation with the family on Sunday January 7th from 1:00 p.m. until 5:00 p.m. at the Robertson County Funeral Home.

Michael was born September 20, 1983, in Springfield. He attended Greenbrier High School and worked in contract maintenance. Michael loved playing video games, playing golf, cooking, and was a professional Square Dancer, having danced on the Grand Ole Opry stage many times. Michael loved spending time with his family, but especially loved spending time with his dogs.

Michael is survived by his wife: Lynda Monroe Mason of Greenbrier, by his parents: Mickey and Deborah Williams Mason of Greenbrier, by his stepdaughter: Cheyenne Morse of North Carolina, by his sister and brother-in-law: Tiffany and Jeremy Bradley of Hendersonville, by his niece and nephew: Payton and Thomas floral squareMichael Wilson both of Greenbrier, and by his step grandson: Zachary Morse of North Carolina.

Mary Agnes Norris Hallums, age 94, of the Martins Chapel Community, passed away Friday, January 5, 2024 at her home surrounded by her loving family.

Mrs. Hallums wishes were to be cremated, and there are no services scheduled at this time.

Mrs. Hallums was born September 13, 1929 in Robertson County, to the late Fred and Earline Summers Norris. She worked as a Seamstress in the upholstery business most of her life.

In addition to her parents, Mrs. Hallums was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Hugh F. Hallums Sr.; sisters, Naomi and Eddie Neal; and brothers, Harold Norris, Charles Norris and John Norris.

She was born August 2, 1972 in Nashville, TN to James Albert and Barbara Jean Jones Whitaker. She worked as a homemaker and was of the Baptist faith. She enjoyed helicopter rides, listening to soft rock and country music, visiting the beach and the mountains and was an avid reader. She is preceded in death by her parents.

She is survived by her sons, Brody Walker, Dillon (Leah) Walker and Joshua Kelly, all of Portland, TN; daughter, Maggie Kelly, Bethpage, TN; significant other, Rick Kelly, Bethpage, TN; sisters, Cindy Tucker, White House, TN and Wanda Canter, Millersville, TN; grandchildren, Lexi, Frankie, Lailah, Jensen, Evelyn and Kayla.

Linda Sue Starling, age 81 of White House, passed away Tuesday, January 2, 2024 at Jubilee Hills Senior Living in Goodlettsville, TN.

A funeral Service was held on Saturday, January 6, 2024 at 1pm at the Jones-Gallagher Funeral Home in Starke, Florida. Visitation was held at the funeral home from 12pm until the hour of service. Burial followed in the Crosby Lake Cemetery in Starke.

She was born in Brooker, FL on September 5, 1942 to the late Woodrow Lanier and Vera Lee Lewis Thomas. Other than her parents she was also preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Frank Starling and a brother, Ronnie Thomas. She worked for AT&T as a customer service representative. Her most cherished title was that of a faithful pastor’s wife and she enjoyed spending time with her family.

Brenda Coriene Shores, age 78 of Chapmansboro, Tennessee, passed away Monday, January 1, 2024 at Hillcrest Healthcare Center.

Funeral services were conducted at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Pleasant View at 11:00AM on Thursday, January 4th, with Bro. Terry Forrest officiating. Burial followed in Mallory’s cemetery with Danny Watson, Landon Shores, Travis Bush, Greg Gray, Jeff Troutt, and Jeff Colton serving as pallbearers.

The family received friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, January 3rd from 4:00PM until 8:00PM and again on Thursday from 9:00AM until the hour of service at 11:00AM.

Mrs. Shores was born on May 24, 1945 in Nashville, Tennessee to the late Wallace & Jeanette Bostelman Carrington. She was a homemaker and her greatest joy was staying home with her children. She also was a daycare director for many years in Joelton and Pleasant View. She loved to quilt, crochet, and color paint. She loved her family and her grandchildren very much and was a member of Bethel Free Will Baptist Church.

Obituary for Carlos E. Broadway

Carlos E. Broadway, 93, of White House, Tennessee, passed away on Wednesday, January 3, 2024 in Nashville. Born August 25, 1930, in Athens, Alabama, he was the son of the late John Henry Broadway and Alice Lee Goolsby Broadway.

Carlos served his country proudly as a Gunnery Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. Upon leaving the military, he worked for Metro Nashville Schools as a mechanic for their buses. He was an avid reader and enjoyed fishing. Carlos was a loving father and grandfather who will be missed dearly.

In addition to his parents, Mr. Broadway was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Emma Frances Broadway.

He is survived by his daughter Delores Rayburn; grandson Drew Rayburn; granddaughter Meredith Rayburn; and several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
