Obituary Laura Ellen Howe

Laura Ellen Howe, age 62 of Springfield, died Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at her home. Her remains are to be cremated and private family services will be held.

Mrs. Howe was born October 2, 1957 in Huntington, WV. She was a sales manager for Belk. She enjoyed gardening and taking care of her lawn. She loved her children and grandchildren and all children. She also loved to travel and go boating in the summer.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Georgia Gillman Marcum, and a grandchild, Bradley Burns.

Obituary for James Wendell Hix

James Wendell Hix, 96, passed away Monday, December 23, 2019 at Parkwest Hospital, Knoxville, TN.

Born in Springfield, TN, December 9, 1923 he was the son of the late Johnny J. Hix and Lula Moses Hix. James was also preceded in death by his two wives; Hazel Rankin Hix and Geneva Roy Hix. James was raised and educated in Springfield graduating from Springfield High School.

He was an Army veteran of World War Two and served in the European Theater. He began his career in banking after returning from service and was employed by the former Third National Bank (now Suntrust) as a credit analyst. He retired in 1985.

floral squareHe is survived by his son, James R. Hix; step-son, Blake Richardson and Kelly Richardson his wife; granddaughters, Lindsey H. Stevens and husband Terry Stevens, Lauren Hutcherson and husband Russell Hutcherson; great-granddaughter, Brooklyn Stevens ; great-grandson Beau Stevens, and great-great-granddaughter Delilah Hutcherson; grandson, Raleigh Richardson; granddaughter, Molly Dedrick and husband Elijah Dedrick. James is also survived by his brother Don H Hix and his wife Sue of Springfield.

A graveside service with military honors will be held Saturday at 12 noon at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Goodlettsville.

Arrangements have been entrusted to Cole & Garrett Funeral Home of Goodlettsville.

Arrangements for Shirley Faye Turner

On December 25, 2019 the Lord called another one of His Angels Home, Shirley Faye Turner. Shirley was born July 7, 1954 to the late James H. Turner and Mary E. Turner in Robertson County.

She attended Springfield High School and graduated with the Class of 1972. Shirley Faye was previously employed by Electrolux for over twenty-five years and then went to work for Atwood Mobile Products where she retired in 2016.

She was known as “Boss Lady” to many. She loved to cook, travel and enjoyed life.

Shirley Faye professed a hope in Christ at an early age at Mt. Zion Missionary Baptist Church and later attended St. Matthew Holy Missionary Baptist Church.
She is preceded in death by her brother, Randy Turner; nephews, James Turner and Larry Turner.

Shirley Faye leaves to cherish her memories: Her loving mother, Mary Blakemore; sister, Leann Cross; brothers, Perry (Joyce) Patterson, Larry Turner and James R. Obituary for Priestly Jett Wherry

Priestly Jett Wherry, 55, was born June 25, 1964 in Nashville, Tennessee and passed away on Saturday, December 21, 2019. He was the son of Martha Elizabeth Basford Wherry and the late Priestly Edward Wherry, Jr.

Mr. Wherry enjoyed his Sunday School class at Northside Baptist Church, where he was a member.

He is survived by his mother; sister, Emily Mills (Bob); niece, Elizabeth Price (Jeremiah); nephew, Dan Mills (Rachel); great nephews, Jackson Price and Owen Mills and great-niece, Celia Price. He was predeceased by his father.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 – 8:00 p.m. on Monday, December 23, 2019 at Caughman-Harman Funeral Home, Lexigton Chapel. Graveside services will be held 11am, Friday, December 27, 2019 at Bellwood Cemetery in Adams, Tennessee.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home Thursday from 4 until 8 PM and Friday from 11 AM until the hour of service.

Mrs. Hunter was born February 26, 1959 in Davidson County. She worked in the laboratory at DCI Inc. and was a member of the White Hill Community Church. She enjoyed watching her grandchildren and playing with her dog, Petey. She was preceded in death by her husband, Terry Hunter.

Obituary for Gavin Gene William

Gavin Gene Williams, born September 20, 1961 in Casper, Wyoming, resided in Springfield, Tennessee joined our Heavenly Father on Thursday, December 19, 2019, at age 58.

Gavin developed a love of the outdoors at an early age. With his first dirt bike, he became an avid rider who loved the freedom of the farm and an open road. He shared his passion for riding with his sisters as a boy, and later with his true love Kathie, and his many brothers, Mitch Orr, Wes Compton, Jim Hunt and the late Gary Morris.

Gavin thrived on serving others in any way he could, and never asked for anything in return. First as a youth and later as a missionary in Norway for 2 years. He also was involved in Boy Scouts where he was Scout Master for many years. He made this journey with his 2 sons. He attended Rick’s College then continuing onto DeVry Institute of Technology in Phoenix, Arizona, where he attained an Associates in Applied Science and later a Bachelor’s degree in Science, both in Electronics Engineering Technology. Given his love of the outdoors, Gavin worked as a farmer and a logger prior to continuing a successful career as an Electronics Engineer.

Gavin Gene Williams met Katherine “Kathie” Martinez and his soon-to-be daughter, Jenni, in 1989 while residing in California. In January 1990, Gavin married his big sweetheart and little sweetheart and together welcomed their first son/brother Joseph in April 1990, and in December ’91 Jenni Legally adopted her daddy Gavin. In 1992, his family moved to North Carolina and welcomed son, Justin in December 1993, and daughter, Jasmine in September 1995. Together with his family they made their home in Springfield, Tennessee in 2007. Soon after, Gavin joined Electrolux as a Senior Hardware Engineer where he continued until his recent passing. Gavin was a man who devoted his life to caring for his family. Above all, his wife, children, and grandchildren were his sole concern and he treasured every precious moment spent with them.

Gavin Gene Williams is survived by his wife Kathie of 29 years, by his children: Joseph Kyle Williams, Justin Marcus (Samantha Culbreath) Williams, Jennifer “Jenni” Rose (Eric) Gilley of Gallatin, TN and Jasmine Marie (Chad Collins) Williams of Springfield, TN; by his grandsons, Piercen, Greysen, and Kohlsen Gilley of Gallatin, TN by his sisters, Glenda (William) Baker, and Geneve (Daniel) Seaton both of Utah; by his father and mother-in-law, Apolonio and Beatrice Martinez, Jr., floral squareof Greenbrier, TN; by his brother-in-law, Frank Marcus Martinez, of California; by his many nieces and nephews; and his chosen brother (from another mother) Tony Burch of North Carolina. Gavin is preceded in death by his father and mother, Ruben Gene and Alice Arlene (Warner) Williams.

Memorial services will be conducted Saturday, December 28th, 2019 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 107 Twin Hills Drive, Madison, Tennessee. Visitation will begin at 3:30 p.m. with the Memorial service following at 4:00 p.m. Immediate family will gather for a private luncheon following the service.

Obituary for Arthur Earl “Buttons” Hudgens

Arthur Earl “Buttons” Hudgens, 66, of Adams, departed this life on Wednesday December 18, 2019 at his residence.

A Celebration of his life was conducted on Monday December 23rd at 12 noon in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Brother Frank Kirby and Pastor Johnny Clemons officiating. Burial followed in Restlawn Memorial Gardens in Cedar Hill with Charles Gardner, Curtis Walker, Jeffery Northington, and Veron Clemons as pallbearers. Flower Bearer’s was the Mother Board of Star of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church and Brenda Mauritz. Visitation with the family was held on Monday at 11:00 a.m. until service time.

Mr. Hudgens was born September 20, 1953 in Cedar Hill to the late Arthur Washington and Delores Eloise Cooley Hudgens. He professed Christ at an early age and was a member of Star of Calvary Missionary Baptist Church in Adams. Mr. Hudgens was a graduate of Jo Byrns High School floral squareClass of 1971. He enjoyed listening to music, fishing, and watching his Oakland Raider’s play football.

Obituary Faye Atkins Fyke

Faye Atkins Fyke, 95, of Springfield, died Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at NHC Healthcare in Springfield.

Graveside services was conducted on Saturday at 10:00 am in the Belmont Cemetery in Allensville, KY with Galloway Harper, Jason Harper, Michael England, Tyler Leding, and John Michael Head serving as pallbearers. There was no visitation prior to the graveside service.

Mrs. Fyke was born on February 23, 1924 to the late Carrol and Maude King Atkins. She was a homemaker and a member of the Allensville United Methodist Church. Mrs. Fyke loved going to church and working in her flowers.

Katherine Minnis Johnson, age 90, of Springfield passed away Tuesday, December 24, 2019 at her daughters residence.

The family will receive friends 4pm to 8pm on Friday, December 27, 2019 and again 10am to 11am on Saturday, December 28, 2019 at Austin & Bell Funeral Home Springfield. The funeral will be at 11am on Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery.

She was born in Springfield, TN on November 6, 1929 to the late Oley and Fannie Goff Minnis. She was also preceded in death by her husband Edd Hawkins Johnson; brothers, David Minnis, Dorris Minnis and son-in-law William Richard “Ricky” Head.

She was a homemaker and a member of Barren Plains Baptist Church. She loved flowers, sewing and crafts. She was known for helping anyone in need. She loved her church, her family and was a loving and caring mother who cared for her daughter Nancy until she herself was called home by her Lord.

Arrangements for Mary E. Harris

Mary Elizabeth (Bailey) Harris was born Wednesday, August 28, 1946 to the late Elizabeth (Young) and Eddie Bailey. She was the youngest girl of eight siblings.

The path of Mary’s life crossed the path of William Thomas Harris and the two became one in the state of matrimony on March 31, 1973. Together they raised three children.

She resided in Robertson County and attained her GED from Springfield High School in 1988. For ten years Mary was employed at Professional Bags.

At a young age she professed her hope in Christ and united with First Missionary Baptist Church where she was a devoted member and held many roles including church aid, member of the choir and finance committee as well as provided janitorial services.

Preceding her in death, her father, Eddie Bailey; mother, Elizabeth Frazier; husband, William Thomas Harris; sister, Rebecca Toliver and brother, Charles Bailey.

floral squareTo cherish her memory and in honor of Mary’s life she leaves a living legacy two daughters, Angela Jean, Carla Denise (Jay) and son, Bobby Wayne (Sheree) as well as grandchildren Bobby Jr., Javon, Brianna, LaShania, Ebonie (DeAndre), and Timothy Jr. and a host of greatgrandchildren. The family received friends at the funeral home, Saturday, December 21st, from 4-8:00PM, and again on Sunday from 12:00PM until the hour of service at 2:00PM.

Mrs. Harris was born on June 29, 1937 in the Brewer’s Chapel Community to the late Dorris and Aquilla Lipscomb Winters. She was retired from State Industries in Ashland City and a member of Brewer’s Chapel United Methodist Church for over 60 years.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband Jacky Harris.

Mrs. Hulsey was born January 17, 1929 in Springfield to the late Boyd and Mayme Denny DeSheles. She worked at Acme Boot and attended The Grove Church. She loved music, running errands and going to her hairdresser, but especially enjoyed her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Calvin Brewington, age 81 of Greenbrier passed away Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Main Street Senior Living in Hendersonville, TN.

The family received friends 4pm to 8pm Friday, December 20, 2019 and again 9am to 10am on Saturday at Austin & Bell Funeral Home Greenbrier. The funeral service was held at 10am Saturday, December 21, 2019 at the funeral home with Rev. Ralph Carter and Eugene Brewington officiating. Entombment followed at Springfield Memorial Gardens Mausoleum.

A Masonic Service will be held at 7pm on Friday night, December 20, 2019 at the funeral home.

He was born August 12, 1938 in Lebanon, TN to the late Lynn and Maud Pruett Brewington. He was also preceded in death by his first wife, Rebecca Fay Brewington; second wife, Peggy Jean Brewington; brothers, James, Claud and Melvin Brewington.

He was the owner of Brewington Salvage and was a member of First Baptist Church of Ridgetop.

Stacey Elvis Buttrey, age 78, and the music he made, died quietly at home on Wednesday, December 18, 2019 after a valiant battle with an undefeatable foe- PSP.

Elvis was a husband, father, musician, farmer, woodworker, hunter, and builder. His livelihood came from building airplane wings, but his living came from making music. Of all his pastimes, his greatest joy was in picking and singing. The music he made was not in the guitar. The music was in the man. Every part of his life personified the rhythms of nature, goodness, and the soulful music he played and sang.

Elvis was preceded in death by his parents, Leachey and Marie Buttrey; son, Mike Buttrey; and step-son, Samuel Baltz.

He is survived by his wife, Susanne; son, Shannon (Angelia); step-daughter, Stephanie (Mickey); daughter-in-law, Betty; eight grandchildren; and two of his dearest friends, Martin & Thumper.

She professed a hope in Christ at an early age and was a member of Bridge Hill Missionary Baptist Church. She attended from time to time according to her health.

She was educated in the Robertson County Schools and was a 1966 graduate of Bransford High School. She was an employee of Northcrest Medical Center.

“Rosie” as she was affectionately called was always willing to do what she could for anybody.

In addition to her parents, she was also preceded in death by her brother and son.

Phyllis was born in Nashville, TN on December 11, 1958 to the late Charles G. and Betty Margaret Merritt Green. She was also preceded in death by step-mother, Mary Lou Green.

She was a Baker at Dunkin Donuts in Pleasant View, TN. She enjoyed animals, especially her dog. She loved flea markets, thrift stores, flower gardening and going to the mountains.

Larry J. Schneider, age 73 of Springfield, died Sunday December 15, 2019 at North Crest Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Thursday, December 19th at 10:00 a.m. at the Springfield First United Methodist Church with Reverend Jerry Wallace and Reverend Dr. Jason Wilkerson officiating. Burial followed in Elmwood Cemetery with Jason Newberry, Joey Newberry, Bill Hargraves, Clyde Richert, Bob Ary, Paul Henon, Butch Jones, and Shane Shoemaker serving as pallbearers. Honorary pallbearers were The Believers Sunday School Class and the Praise Team of Springfield First United Methodist Church, David Bellar, and Wayne Stevens. The family received friends at Springfield First United Methodist Church on Wednesday from 3:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. and Thursday from 9:00 a.m. until the hour of service.

Mr. Schneider was born on October 29, 1946 in Gaylord, Minnesota to the late Victor and Elizabeth Schneider. He served his country with honor, courage and commitment as a member of the U.S. Navy from 1966 until 1970 on the USS Bon Homme Richard CVA-31 in Vietnam. He was proud to be a “Navy man.”

floral squareHis industriousness, earnestness and diligence then led him to Springfield, Tennessee where he was the owner of S&S Precision for nearly three decades. It was there that he met and married the love of his life, Ann Newberry Schneider. Larry was a member of Springfield First United Methodist Church, and an unwavering weekly member of the Praise Team band. He leaves behind a tremendous legacy of enjoyment and love of life through travel, golf, music, cars, and delicious food. His friends and family greatly enjoyed his vast knowledge of these topics and knew that every conversation with him would inevitably contain two key components: knowledge of something new they did not know before and true, laugh out loud inducing hilarity and humor. His friends and family take great comfort in the knowledge that they will always carry these “Larry stories” in their hearts and throughout their lives.

Larry is preceded in death by his parents, brother Greg Schneider, and sister-in-law, Gertrude Deal. He is survived by his loving wife of twenty-seven years, Ann Newberry Schneider and sweet Cocoa, their much-loved Pomeranian and constant companion. In addition, he is survived by his sisters Cindy Gran and Debbie Smith, brothers-in law and sister-in-law: Horace and Vickie Newberry, Terry Deal, and nephews Jason Newberry and his wife Julie, Joey Newberry and his wife Emily, and Thomas Deal and his wife Jodi.

The family would like to express their thanks and gratitude to Dr. Sabi Kumar for his compassionate treatment, care, and concern for Larry and the family during his valiant, unwavering battle with esophageal cancer.

Paul Wilson Kendrick was born in Indianapolis, Indiana on December 15, 1946 to the late Irving W. Kendrick and the late Elnora Sebree Kendrick. He was called Home on December 13, 2019.

He was educated in the Robertson County Schools and graduated with the Bransford High School Class of 1966. Paul was a member of St. James Missionary Baptist Church where he served on the Usher Board. He was a former member of King David Lodge 187.
He worked for many years and retired from Tappen Company.

He was united in Holy Matrimony to Deno Pope Kendrick, who preceded him in death. “Kendog” and “Freedom” as he was affectionately called, loved cooking barbeque and having friends over to eat with him. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother and friend.

In addition to his parents and wife, He was preceded in death by one sister, Stella R. Kendrick Dowlen; three brothers, Simon I. Kendrick, James B. Kendrick and David W. Kendrick; brother-in-law, James Pope and four grandchildren.

Mr. Bagwell was born April 13, 1931 in Cedar Hill to the late John Lee and Lillian Evans Bagwell, Sr. He was a graduate of Jo Byrns High School Class of 1949. Mr. Bagwell served as a Warrant Officer in the U.S. Army, and he was retired as a Civil Service Communication Operations Specialist. He was a member of Center Point Baptist Church, where he was a former deacon, and was a member of the Cedar Hill Men’s Club. Mr. Bagwell enjoyed fishing and golfing.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife: Dolores Dempsey Bagwell, by his daughters: Sherree Gail Austin and Lynette Oaks, and by his granddaughter: Cindy Charvis.
