Obituary for Deacon L C Darden

Deacon L C Darden, Age 101. Early Saturday, February 22, 2020 God called his faithful servant, Deacon L C Darden home to Eternal Rest from labor to reward. Born to the late Homer Sr. and Fannie Darden, November 6, 1918.

L C Darden gave his life to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ well over sixty years ago upon joining St. James Missionary Baptist Church. He later became a dedicated Deacon under the pastoral ship of Pastor G.W. Pettus. Words of wisdom, love for his church and pastors, powerful prayers and encouragement, we will forever resonate in our hearts, every devotion he led and songs he sang over the decades was a testimony and declaration of his life today and forever more, “Do Lord, Lord Remember Me,” “Shine On Me,” “Give Me That Old Time Religion,” “Jesus Is On The Mainline,” “I Will Trust In The Lord,” “Lead Me Jesus,” “Get Right With God,” “Come And Go To That Land Where I’m Bound,” “Get Right Church And Let’s Go Home.”

L. C. Darden was educated and attended Bransford School, Robertson County, Tennessee. L. C. Darden was a dedicated worker for many decades and retired from formerly known as L&N now CSX Railroad Line Corporation. L. C. Darden honorably served in the military, United States Army.

Deacon Darden is preceded in death by his long life wife of many years, Mary Darden; mother and father, Homer Sr., and Fannie Darden; brothers, Frank Sr., James Robert, and Homer Jr., Darden; sisters, Emma Chapman, Maggie Murphey; and son, Don Darden.
He leaves to cherish his memories: grandsons, Keith and William Darden; granddaughter, Tara Darden; nephews, James A. Darden, Bobby R. Darden, Johnny Darden (Lynell), Frederick Darden (Sissy), Paul (Elizabeth) Darden of Hendersonville, TN and Frank Darden, Jr. (Patricia) of Indianapolis, IN; nieces, Joyce E. Horton (Dwight) of Nashville, TN, Peggy Williams, and Fannie Bowens (James) of Springfield, TN, Carrie Darden, Joyce Darden, Edith Williams and Freda Ann Darden all of Indianapolis, IN, Pamela Watkins (Ralphell) of Garland, TX; many great and great-great nieces and nephews; special devoted care taker and great niece, floral squareDarlene Darden; great-niece, Shophia Bowens; special friends, Mr. and Mrs. Randy and Gwen Wentz, Dr. Teresa Williams, Paul Carr; and Mrs. Erma Dowlen and Family.

Funeral Service was Saturday, February 29, 2020 at 1:00 pm at St James Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend James Gardner, Officiant and Pastor Mark Washington, Eulogy. Interment was in Restlawn Memorial Garden.

Obituary for John Traylor

John Bailey Traylor, age 64, of Adairville, KY passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at St. Thomas West Hospital in Nashville.

Funeral services will be held Monday, March 9, 2020 at 11am in the chapel of the Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Springfield with Bishop Clint Barnes officiating. Burial will follow in the Greenwood Cemetery in Adairville with Luis Ordonez, Favian Castellones, Omar Guevara, Mario Ordonez, Michael Bush, Keith Slack, James Farlee and Dalton Sego serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held at the funeral home on Sunday, March 8, 2020 from 4-8pm and again on Monday from 9am until the hour of service at 11am.

Mr. Traylor was born July 9, 1955 in Clarksville, TN to the late John W. and Jennie Ruth Grant Traylor. He worked as a woodcrafter at Crabtree Furniture and was a U.T. fan. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and taking care of them.

He is survived by his wife, Shirley Sharp Traylor; daughters, Elizabeth (Favian) Castellanos and Charlotte (Luis) Ordonez, both of Adairville; sisters, Linda (Jerry) Holt of Adams and Patty (Keith) Slack of Chapmansboro; and grandchildren, Victor Traylor, Gloria Garcia, Elaina Castellanos, Elisandra Castellanos, Jazmin Ordonez and Leovanni Castellanos.

Ralph Edward Van Brunt, Jr., age 53 of Springfield, died Sunday, March 1, 2020 at his home.

Funeral services will be conducted Monday, March 9, 2020 at 2:00 PM in the Oakhurst Chapel of Robertson County Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Palestine Cemetery, The family will receive friends at the funeral home Monday from 10 AM until the hour of service.

Mr. Van Brunt was born August 28, 1966 in Princeton, NJ. He was of the Catholic faith and attended Our Lady of Lourdes catholic Church. He was a veteran of the United States Army and was a retired security guard. He was preceded in death by his mother Concetta Lombardo Van Brunt.

Obituary for Barbara Jean Browning Sprouse

Barbara Jean Browning Sprouse, 85, of Springfield, passed from this life on Friday February 28, 2020 at North Crest Medical Center.

Funeral services were conducted Tuesday March 3rd at 2:00 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Brother Mike Treen and Joan Powell officiating. Interment followed in the Elmwood Cemetery with Jordan Sprouse, Tim Long, David Dorris, Hank Graves, Cory Toothman, and Jonathan Foote serving as pallbearers. The family received friends on Monday from 4:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. and on Tuesday from 1:00 p.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mrs. Sprouse was born October 15, 1934 in Robertson County to the late Jess and Margaret Winters Browning. She was a graduate of Coopertown High School, a homemaker, and a member of New Chapel United Methodist Church. Mrs. Sprouse was an avid UT Vols fan and loved spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren and great grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers: Bill, Houston, Buddy, and Jerry Browning.

Obituary Richard Lawrence Cofer

Richard Lawrence Cofer, 85, of Springfield, passed away on Thursday February 27, 2020 at his home.

Memorial services will be conducted Saturday March 7th at 1:00 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Brother Martin Babb officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 10:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Mr. Cofer was born September 15, 1934 in Robertson County to the late Joseph Richard and Nannie Leota Lawrence Cofer. He was a graduate of Springfield High School Class of 1952, where he was Vice President of his senior class and was an outstanding football player for the Yellow Jackets. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves. Mr. Cofer was a member of Springfield Baptist Church, where he served as an Usher, and was a charter member of the Springfield Civitan Club. He was the co-owner of the former Tennessee Lighting and Appliance in Springfield. He retired from Hollingsworth Oil Company as a route sales collector. Mr. Cofer enjoyed football, baseball, youth sports, fishing, and was an avid Springfield Yellow Jackets fan.

Carl Phillip Williams, age 72, of Goodlettsville, passed away Tuesday, March 3, 2020 at NorthCrest Medical Center in Springfield.

Funeral services will be held at the Main Street Church of Christ on Saturday, March 7, 2020 at 12 noon with Brother Joe Rushing and Barry Thornberry officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery with Hunter Duncan, Mike McMurray, David Hazelwood, Mark Reeves, Chris Cunningham and Zach Haynes serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be held at the church on Friday, March 6, 2020 from 4-8pm and again on Saturday from 10am until the hour of service at 12 noon.

Mr. Williams was born October 6, 1947 in Ft. Pierce, FL to the late Carl “C.P.” and Reba Bullock Williams. He worked as a Custodian at Greenbrier Middle School and was a member of the Main Street Church of Christ.

In addition to his parents Mr. Williams is preceded in death by his brothers, Harold Williams and Edward Williams and his sister, Peggy Williams Hawley.

Obituary for Thomas Bilyeu

Thomas Porter Bilyeu, age 68, of Springfield, passed away Monday, March 2, 2020 at The Waters of Springfield.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, March 4, 2020 at 1pm at the Mt. Denson Cumberland Presbyterian Church. Burial followed in the Mt. Denson Cemetery with Johnathon Bilyeu, Tom Hunter, John Price, Alan Roach, Kenny Betts and Randy Bilyeu serving as pallbearers.

Visitation was held at the church on Wednesday from 11am until the hour of service at 1pm.

Mr. Bilyeu was born October 12, 1951 in Springfield to the late Sidney and Ada Hicks Bilyeu. He worked as a cabinet builder and installer, but truly enjoyed fishing and woodworking. Mr. Bilyeu was also a veteran of the U.S. Army.

Elaine Morrow, age 71, of Hendersonville, TN passed away on Monday, March 2, 2020.

She is preceded in passing by her parents, Lyman Brooks and Victoria Athylene Lankford.

She is survived by her husband, David L. Morrow; daughters, Stephanie (Darryl Brawley) Morrow, Johnna Ryan; siblings, Sandra (Scott) Satterfield, Landon Lankford, Sherry (Wayne) Hall, Kathy (Stan) Gwaltney; grandchildren, Kelcie (Tim) Smith, Garrett Puhl, Madison Puhl; great-grandchildren, Rosston Horton, Skylan Smith, Remmie Smith; lifelong best friend, Linda (Ronald) Hackett; several other dear relatives and friends also survive.

Born in Smith county, Elaine’s family moved to Nashville where she attended public school and graduated from Hume-Fogg High School, where she met her husband David. They were married on April 19, 1967 and have been together for 53 years. She began her working days as a receptionist/secretary for a machine and tool supply company. Later, she opted to become a full-time mother and home-maker at which she excelled. Elaine was a long-term member of Liberty United Methodist Church. Her faith sustained her throughout her life.

floral squareElaine’s passions in life were her family, her flower gardens, oldies music, and life itself. Her strength and determination will remain a blessed memory and inspiration to all who knew and loved her.

Visitation will be on Saturday, March 14, 2020 at 12:00 p.m. until the Celebration of Life Memorial Service at 1:00 p.m. at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Hendersonville with cremation to follow.

Mr. Steven “Steve” Ray Grissom passed away March 1, 2020 in Gallatin, TN at the age of 59.

Steve is survived by his stepsons, Thomas and Michael Perry; brothers, Dale (Laura) Grissom, and Jeffrey (Patricia) Grissom; and sister, Pamela (Mark) Helton. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mary Grissom; parents, Curtis and Wilma Grissom; and brother, Kenneth “Pig” Grissom.

Steve was born July 4, 1960 to Curtis and Wilma Grissom at General Hospital in Nashville, TN. He attended Hendersonville High School in Hendersonville, TN. He will be remembered as a fun-loving guy, who was fascinated by wolves, old cars and trucks. Steve married the love of his life, Mary, in 1994. They spent many great years together until she passed in 2010. He resided in Gallatin at the time of his death.

Mrs. Hall was born may 27, 1926 in Ashland City to the late Charles Bidwell and Eddi Desmonie Douglas Williams. She was a homemaker and member of the Dickson First United Methodist Church.

Charles Wayne Stark, 86, of Springfield, passed away on Sunday February 23, 2020 at his home.

Interment will follow in Springfield Memorial Gardens with Michael Stark, Adam Burchett, Justin Tucker, and other family and friends serving as pallbearers. Mr. Stark was born December 8, 1933 in Cross Plains. He was a retired machinist and worked in Industrial Maintenance for many years. Mr. Stark was a veteran of the U.S. Army, and was a member of Pleasant Hill Baptist Church in Orlinda. He loved fishing, gardening, doing automotive repair, and watching westerns on TV. He was preceded in death by his father: Izor Merritt Stark, by his mother: Louise Rigsby Hensley, and by his brother: Ralph “Buddy” Stark.

Mrs. Hardaway was born November 7, 1942 in Springfield to the late Ernest and Meakle Wilson Newberry. She was a retired boot seamstress and was a member of Center Point Baptist Church. Mrs. Hardaway loved helping others, mowing her grass, working in her flowers, and sewing. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband: Walter Hardaway, by her son: Joe Green, her daughter: Ann Green, by her step-child: Susan Trembley, and by her siblings: Charles Newberry and Kathleen Hardaway.

Bobby Lynn Neal, age 79 of Springfield, TN died Saturday February 22, 2020 at Skyline Medical Center.

Funeral services were held at 2 pm on Tuesday February 25, 2020 in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Elmwood Cemetery with Sonny Neal, Max Hodge, Jake Hodge, Caleb Hood, Mike Stafford, Jerry Wooden, Brandon Landrum and Charlie Mayes serving as pallbearers. Jimmy Knight and the Coopertown Men’s Club served as honorary pallbearers. The family received friends at the funeral home on Monday from 4-8 pm and again on Tuesday from 10 am until the hour of service at 2 pm.

Bobby Lynn was born July 30, 1940 in Robertson Co. TN to the late Herbert Elmore “Sonny” Neal and Mildred Moudy Neal. His sister, Judy Neal also preceded him in death. He was a member of Mt. Sharon Cumberland Presbyterian Church, a veteran of the United States Army and was retired from Industrial Sales. He loved farming, particularly raising cattle and tobacco. He was a long-time member of the Coopertown Men’s Club and was an active supporter and contributor of Springfield and Coopertown youth athletics.

Surviving him are his wife of nearly 60 years, Mary Ellen Bracey Neal of Springfield; sons and daughter’s-in-law, Tony and Kathy Neal of Springfield, Brent and Mary Beth Neal of Newbern, TN; daughter and son-in-law, Mary Beth and Lance Hodge of Louisville, TN; brother and sister-in-law, Charles Herbert and Margaret Neal of Mississippi; sister and brother-in-law, Betty Margaret and Bob White of Lenoir City and six grandchildren, Emily (Caleb) Hood, Sonny Neal, Amanda Neal, Kate Neal, Max Hodge and Jake Hodge.

Mrs. Reader was born January 8, 1930 in Conway, PA to the late Paul and Catherine Pettner Bobo. She attended Springfield First United Methodist Church and was a homemaker. She had also worked as a jeweler in Pennsylvania when she lived there. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her brothers, floral squareRichard “Dick” and Herman “Bo” Bobo, and her sister, Lene Butka.

She is survived by her husband of 67 years, Wayne E. Reader of Springfield; son and daughter-in-law, Douglas and Toni Reader of Greenbrier; and granddaughter, Katelyn Reader-Zanger of Chicago, IL.

Obituary for Shirley A. Washington:

Shirley Ann Finch Washington departed this life peacefully Thursday, February 20, 2020 and was born October 31, 1942 to the late Eddie C. and Rosie Lee Gaines Finch.

She graduated school at Adairville High. Professed a hope in Christ at an early age at Mariah Grove Baptist Church in Adairville, KY and later joined her Sister and Mother at Mt. Herman Baptist Church in Adairville and became a member. She was an usher and was dedicated to her faith as she drove the distance from Nashville every Sunday to worship until her health began to fail.

She began her work history at Emerson Electric in Russellville, KY where she worked 18 years. She then moved to Nashville, TN to build a life with her husband and began working at Vanderbilt University Hospital as a dietary assistant for 41 years and retired in 2001. In 2003 her grandson, Bryson, was born and she enjoyed her retirement and loving on him until she closed her eyes.

She meant a lot to the community of Adairville as she was the President of the Homemakers Association. She would enthusiastically plan and execute these meeting where they would meet once a month, bring a dish to share, exchange recipes and discuss décor ideas. She served several years with the Girl Scouts of Middle TN Association as a Troop Leader mentoring young
girls, then became Service Unit Chairman responsible for all Leaders and Girl Scout members in the Middle TN area. She made a huge impact on these young girls as they are now adults and still remember Mrs. Washington and how their experiences during the 1980’s and early 90’s in Girl Scouts helped shaped their lives.
In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her Sister whom she was very close, Sarah Ruth Finch and Brother, Edward Lee Finch.

She leaves to cherish her memories her loving husband, Bob Washington of Nashville, TN; Daughter, Sherrye (Robert) Washington- Moore and doting Grandson, Bryson Moore, Nashville, TN. Two nieces whom she adored, Celeste (Walter) Harris of Murfreesboro, TN; Candice (Kenroy) Finch-Richardson of Florida; Sister-In-Law, Phyllis Finch of Bowling Green, KY; Aunt, Lucille (James) Finch of Russellville, KY; devoted friend, Savannah (Charlie) Darden who never left her side; caring neighbors of 52 years George and Barbara Vaughn. Her Sisters-In-Law, Mary Francis Trotter of Springfield, TN, Cora (Joe) Wells of Adairville, KY, Callie Wells of Springfield, TN and Ethel Taylor of Springfield, TN. Brothers-in-law, William (Dorothy) Washington, Indianapolis of IN and Richard (Ruthie) Washington, Paducah, KY and a host of cousins in Russellville, KY and Kokomo, IN.

Obituary for William “Howard” Martin

William Howard Martin, age 89, of Hendersonville, TN passed away on Monday, February 24, 2020.

Howard was a dedicated husband and loving father and grandfather. He retired from Tennessee Building Products after he served in the US Marine Corps. He lived up to their motto of, “Semper Fidelis”, proving himself “always faithful”.

He is preceded in death by his mother, Blanche Clendenning; grandparents, Zack and Vera Martin; and siblings, Betty Davis and Bobby Gann.

He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Charline Martin; son, Tony Martin and his girlfriend, Annette Rudolph; daughter, Cindy Troutt; sisters, Barbara Hornal, Inez (James) Hardison, and Peggy Troutt; aunt, Alline Martin; grandchildren, David Troutt, Tonya Troutt, Alex Martin, Hannah Martin, Sarah Beth Rudolph, and Miranda Rudolph; great-grandchildren, Makayla, Karleigh, Kolton and Kamryn Troutt, Destiny, Dynasty and Dillon Parks, and Kyra Troutt; several great-great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews also survive.

Juanita Jane Russell, 78, of Ledbetter, KY passed away at 7:01 AM on Sunday, February 23, 2020 at Baptist Health of Paducah.

Mrs. Russell was a Payroll Specialist, a Veteran of the Army National Guard and of the Baptist faith.

She is survived by her husband, Jim Ladd of Ledbetter; one daughter, Mitzi (Brown) Hamsley of Springfield, TN; two stepdaughters, Suzanne Shepperd of Grand Rivers, Vicki Talley of Grand Rivers; one sister, Kaye Head of Gallatin, TN; three grandchildren, Justin, Amber and Amanda; two greatgrandchildren, Kendyll and Easton; several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Dudley and Jane (Farmer) Adams; one sister, Linda Caroland.

Funeral services will begin at 1:00 PM on Thursday, February 27, 2020 at Hughes Funeral Home in Paducah with Rev. Jim Boyd officiating. Burial will follow at Brook Hill Memorial Park Cemetery in Paducah.

Milton “Gary” Bess, age 83 of Greenbrier passed away Saturday, February 22nd at NHC Springfield.

The family received friends from 4pm to 8pm, Monday, February 24th and 10am to 11:30am on Tuesday, February 25 at Austin & Bell Funeral Home Greenbrier. The funeral service followed at 11:30 on Tuesday at the funeral home with Rev. Wayne Bess officiating. Burial followed in Forest Lawn Cemetery, Goodlettsville.

He was born January 11, 1937 in Nashville, TN to the late Orvan Almer “O.A.” and Flora “Irene” Henderson Bess. He was also preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Ann Whitaker Bess, brother, Harold Bess and a sister, Juanita Bess.

He was a dry wall installer in the construction business. He was a Nascar fan, especially Mark Martin and loved being outdoors.
He is survived by his children, Crystal (Adam) Lessman, Tammy (Kirk) Tharp, James Bess, Lisa Floyd; siblings, Melvin (Ruth) Bess, Roger (Pat) Bess, Wesley (Martha) Bess, James (Isabel) Bess, David (Jennifer) Bess; grandchildren, Kaitlin Bess, Caleb Lessman, Kyle Lessman, Kirsten Bess, Ashley Tharp, Tristan Tharp, Nicky Floyd and great-grandchild, Peyton West.

David Cleveland Sowell, age 49, of Springfield, passed away Saturday, February 22, 2020 after a tragic automobile accident.

Obituary for Elliott Lee Owen

Age 30 of White House passed away Thursday, February 20, 2020 in Hendersonville, TN. He was born May 25, 1989 in Springfield, TN to Kenny Owen & Angel Wilkerson.

He was a 2008 graduate of White House Heritage High School and attended Western Kentucky University after graduation. He was a 2005 member of the State Championship football team at Ravenwood High School, MVP of the White House freshman football team and the All Region Tailback in 2008 of the White House Heritage football team. He also was a member of the soccer team and wrestling teams at White House High School and played rugby for Western Kentucky University. Lee was only 5’2″ tall but an extremely hard hitter on the gridiron and almost impossible to take down. He had a special love for children and for all animals. He attended The Church at Grace Park.

He is preceded in death by his special great-grandmother, Ruby Harden; paternal grandmother, Joyce Kaeser; maternal grandparents, Charles and Teruyo Goto Wilkerson. He is survived by his father, Kenny Owen, White House, TN; mother, Angel (John) Grieve, Smyrna, TN; son, Dawson, Springfield, TN; fiance’, Amanda Summerlin, Hendersonville, TN; paternal grandfather, Bobby (Archie) Owen, Hendersonville, TN; brother, James (Carrie) Wilkerson, Brentwood, TN; sister, Trinity Pack, Smyrna, TN.
