ROBERTSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) — Smokey Barn News has confirmed that Richard Steven “Rick” Overbey, former Assistant Fire Chief of the White House Community Volunteer Fire Department, has died. Born on November 3, 1957, Overbey passed away on August 19, 2024, at an assisted living center in Decaturville, Tennessee. He was 66.

Known to many as Rick, he was a man of many talents and deep community ties. He served as the Assistant Fire Chief of the White House Volunteer Fire Department in Tennessee from 1986 to 1993, where he was renowned for his larger-than-life personality and unwavering dedication to helping others.

Rick was instrumental in the construction of the firehouse that still serves the community today. (SEE VIDEO BELOW) After retiring from the fire department due to back surgery, he continued to contribute to the community through his handyman business, Rick’s Fix It. He was also a skilled crane operator and an avid drummer, known for hosting annual BBQs that brought the community together.

Rick’s life was marked by his resilience and dedication, which was especially evident in 2014 when his Springfield home was tragically destroyed by a fire.  As a former firefighter, Rick had spent years battling fires, but on March 14, 2014, it was his own home that was lost. FULL VIDEO REPORT  Despite the devastating loss, Rick remained strong, supported by his community, which rallied around him in his time of need. Though the fire was initially deemed suspicious, it was later attributed to an electrical problem.

“We remember with deep respect our former Assistant Chief, Rick Overby, who served with dedication from 1986 to 1997. Rick was instrumental in building our current Station 51 in 1991 and brought his skills as a tow truck driver, handyman, and wood craftsman to the department.

“Rick’s involvement extended beyond his official duties. He lived behind Station 51 and was actively engaged in many calls. On a personal note, Rick was a friend who helped me build my home, and his craftsmanship continues to be a valued part of my life.

“Though he would have continued to serve if he had remained local and not struggled with chronic back pain, Rick’s contributions and friendship will be deeply missed. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends during this time.”  Joe Williams, Fire Chief White House Community Volunteer Fire Department

Rick is survived by his brothers, Ronnie Overbey (Sandy), Roger Overbey, Randy Overbey (Cheryl), and Robbie Overbey (Cindy), as well as many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, and a great-great-nephew. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sherian Harris Overbey, his mother, Lois Overbey, his father, John Henry Overbey, and his brother and sister-in-law, Johnny Royce Overbey and Marta Overbey.

In keeping with Rick’s and his family’s wishes, there will not be a public service. We encourage all who knew him to reflect on his impact on their life and remember him in the privacy of their own thoughts.
