Obituary for SSG Thomas James Johnson

SSG Thomas James Johnson, age 31 of Watertown, New York, formerly of Joelton, Tennessee died Monday, July 19, 2021 at his residence.

Funeral services will be conducted at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Pleasant View at 11:30AM on Thursday, August 5. Burial will follow at 2:00PM in Middle Tennessee State Veterans Cemetery in Nashville with full military honors.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday, August 5, from 9:00AM until the hour of service at 11:30AM.

Thomas was born on May 28th, 1990 to James Francis, II and Cynthia Ann Shimko Johnson. He was actively serving in the U.S. Army. He was very patriotic and his childhood dream was to become a soldier. He became a senior rated Jumpmaster who loved everything Airborne. One of his proudest moments was when his father pinned his jump wings on him. He completed one tour to Afghanistan and two additional tours to the Middle East. His duty stations included Germany, Fort Bragg, JBER Alaska and Fort Drum. Thomas always had a love for history and was working on a degree in Military History. He loved his Tennessee Titans, Harry Potter, building Legos, and being on his boat. Thomas enjoyed spending time with family, friends, and his fur babies.

He is preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Squire and Wilma Johnson; and his maternal grandmother, Alice Shimko.

floral squareIn addition to his parents, he is survived by a son, Landon Maverick Johnson; daughter, Scarlett Liberty Johnson; mother of his children, Michelle Johnson; grandfather, John J. Shimko; brother, Jeffrey (Richard Young) Johnson; sister, Jill Marie Johnson; nephew, Oliver Lucas Johnson-Young; and many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Mary Anne Winfrey, age 81 of Greenbrier passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021 at NorthCrest Medical Center in Springfield, TN.

Karl Thurmond Brown Sr., age 82 of Springfield, Tennessee, died Saturday July 24, 2021, at the Residence at Alive Hospice in Nashville, Tennessee. Funeral services will be held at 11 am on Tuesday July 27, 2021, in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Bro. Michael Smith officiating. Burial will follow in the Elmwood Cemetery with Karl T. Brown Jr, Mark Andrew Brown, Corey Mayo, Daniel Thacker, Robert Brown II and Dawson Watts serving as pallbearers. Aaron Foster and Matthew Bogle will serve as honorary pallbearers.

Karl T. was born July 14,1939 in Springfield to the late James Porter Brown Jr, and Iva Belle King Brown. His son, Robert Barry Brown, brothers, John Brown and Jerry Lee Brown and sister, Peggy Ruth Morris also preceded him in death. He was a lifelong member of North Springfield Baptist Church, a veteran of the United States Navy serving as a Seabee. He was a retired truck driver and was a member of Teamster Local 89.

Mr. Brown is survived by his wife, Lynda Hunter Brown, sons and daughters-in-law, Karl T. and Lisa Brown Jr., Mark Andrew and Lise Brown, daughters, Theresa Rosemary Foster and Kara Lynn floral squareBrown Watts, brother and sister-in-law, James Arthur and Sue Brown, sister and brother-in-law, Nancye Lynn and Gisbert Jaekel, nine grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.

Obituary for Jennie McElyea

Jennie McElyea, age 79 of Ridgetop, Tennessee, died Friday July 23, 2021, at Vanderbilt Medical Center. Graveside services will be held at 2 pm on Tuesday July 27, 2021, in Springfield Memorial Gardens with Pastor Scott Dobbins officiating. The family will receive friends at the Robertson County Funeral Home on Tuesday from 11 am until 1:30 pm.

Mrs. McElyea was born October 10, 1941 in Port Sanilac, MI to the late Bill Gustin and Allegra Lance Gustin. A grandchild, Cory McCormack also preceded her in death. She was a member of Bellshire Assembly of God and was retired from IBM. Jennie had the heart of a true caregiver. She enjoyed reading and collecting antiques, particularly items made of copper.

Mrs. Atwood was born on September 2, 1959 in Rutherford County, Tennessee to John Dryden Bowen and the late Marveline Terry Bowen. Marvenell was a veteran in the United States Navy. She enjoyed going to church, loved to read especially her bible, cross stitching, and spending time with her family.

Obituary for Timothy Nicholas “Tim” Donkin

Timothy Nicholas “Tim” Donkin, 58, of Springfield, passed from this life, at his home, on Wednesday July 21, 2021, exactly one year from the date he was diagnosed with a Glioblastoma. Funeral services will be conducted Sunday July 25th at 2:00 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Brother Marvin Crouch officiating. The family will receive friends on Saturday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. and on Sunday from 11:00 a.m. until service time at the funeral home.

Tim was born September 4, 1962, in Monterey Park, California. He was a graduate of Springfield High School Class of 1980. Tim was the owner and operator of Donkin Auto Repair and he attended Adams Church of Christ. He loved going to Classic Car shows and was always willing to help anyone in any way he could. His life has evolved around his family and spending time with them. He loved traveling to Gatlinburg and to the beach. Tim always put his wife, Kerrie, as his number one priority. He was so proud of his children, and his life was made complete with his two precious granddaughters. Tim was preceded in death by his father: James “Jim” Donkin and by his brother: Jim Donkin.

Tim leaves to cherish his memory, his wife of 32 years, Kerrie Crabtree Donkin of Springfield, by his daughter and son-in-law: Laura and Zach Bugg of Springfield, by his son: Landon Donkin of Springfield, by his granddaughters: Emmerson Claire and Elleigh Nicholas Bugg both of Springfield, by his mother: Claudette Martin of Springfield, by his brothers: Tom (Kathy) Donkin of Nashville, John (Fay) Donkin of Springfield, and Bill Donkin of Springfield, by his sisters: Cathy (Randy) All of Las Vegas, NV, and Cindi (Charles) Stafford of North Carolina, and by his in-laws: Larry and Elaine Crabtree of Springfield.

Obituary for Ronald Lee Simmons

Ronald Lee Simmons, age 70, of Springfield, Tennessee died Tuesday July 20, 2021 at his home. Funeral services will be held at 3 pm on Friday July 23, 2021 in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with burial to follow in the Simmons Family Cemetery in Springfield. Adam Blach, Brandon Simmons, Nolan Simmons, Brian Eatherly, Ryan Simmons and David Simmons will serve as pallbearers. Jerry Simmons, Pat Bailey, Jax Simmons and James Richards will serve as honorary pallbearers. The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 2-8 pm and again on Friday from 10 am until the hour of service at 3 pm.

Mr. Simmons was born November 30, 1950, in Robertson County, Tennessee to the late Lee Guthrie Simmons and Lillian Barbara Keith Simmons. Ronald loved drag racing. He was a member of Mt. Carmel Baptist Church and retired from Delight Products in Springfield where he worked for 43 years and was known to be able to perform most all the tasks that could be done there.

Bowen Walter “Bo” Hinkle, Jr. age 69 of Hendersonville, passed away on Saturday, July 24, 2021. He was a loving and caring person who never met a stranger. Bo had a tremendous sense of humor. He loved listening to Vern Gosdin and watching old Westerns over and over again. He loved his grandbabies and loved letting them do whatever their parents said no to. He loved Bud Light and begging for Bloody Mary’s. He loved Bull Dozers and cowboy boots.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Brenda Gail Hinkle; parents, Bowen and Gert Hinkle; brothers, Jerry and Terry Hinkle and his sister Judy Hancock. He is survived by his sons, Kevin Hinkle and floral squareTommy Toombs; daughter, Tina Toombs; sisters, Brenda Gosnell and Deborah Brown; grandchildren, Brooklyn Bush, Kayla Bush and Kody Hinkle; great-grandchildren, Serenity Vanags, Brantley Swain and Sadie Hinkle.

Amanda “Mandy” LeAnne Long, age 39, of Greenbrier, died on July 24, 2021 at her home. Amanda was born on August 26, 1981 in Nashville, Tennessee to Paul, Jr. and Phyllis Evans Long. She was a stay at home mom and loved her family, especially her daughter, Kimbree. Through her health issues she was a true fighter but had a tender heart. She was of Baptist faith and attended Grace Baptist Church in Springfield.

Obituary for James Gary McNeese

Age 76 of Cross Plains went home to be with the Lord Saturday, July 24, 2021 at Ivy Crest Assisted Living in Pulaski, TN. He was born November 1, 1944 in Ardmore, Alabama to James David & Sarah Hobbs McNeese. He worked for Dupont until his retirement. Mr. McNeese enjoyed listening to gospel music and was of the Pentecostal faith. He loved fishing, metal detecting, coin collecting, watching sports and had a great sense of humor. He enjoyed lending a helping hand to others every time that he could.

He is preceded in death by his parents; daughter, Teri Groezinger. He is survived by his wife, Brenda McNeese, Cross Plains, TN; daughter, Mitzi (Don) Young, Antioch, TN; grandson, Justin (Kaitlin) Young, Pulaski, TN; sisters, Julia (David) Eidson, White House, TN, Sheila (Jimmy) Coleman, Clarksville, TN and Patsy (Scott) Hoback, Joelton, TN; great-granddaughter, Elaina.

Timothy Lynn Bidwell, age 37 of Greenbrier passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2021 in Hendersonville. Tim was born in Madison, TN on August 16, 1983 to Ted Bidwell and Patricia Fitzpatrick Allen. He was preceded in death by step-mother, Denise Lynn Bidwell.

He was a flooring installer and finisher. He loved his daughter Alayna very much and enjoyed his job.

Obituary for Horace Leslie Harper

Horace Leslie Harper died peacefully July 20, 2021 after a courageous battle with Parkinson’s disease.

Horace was born April 11, 1940 in Eagleville, TN to Doris L. and Beulah Vaughn Harper.
He graduated from East High School in 1958 and never missed a day of school. Horace attended Belmont College and the University of Tennessee and graduated with an Accounting degree. During his long career, he worked as a Certified Public Accountant and he also worked in the hospitality industry for many years.

Horace was also very athletic and played in several basketball leagues and was on a church bowling league. His love of sports translated into him coaching Little League basketball, baseball and soccer teams in which his beloved son played.

Horace was preceded in death by his father, Doris and mother, Beulah, and his younger brother, Thomas S. Harper.

Horace is survived by his beloved wife of 60 years, Janet Sue and his three children, Lynn (Roger) Stoll, Christi (Brandon) Brown and George (Stephanie) Harper and granddaughters Jessica and Hadlea Harper, Elizabeth and grandson Edwin Stoll and two step-grandchildren.

SaraLou “Sally” Stokes, age 74 of Pleasant View, Tennessee, passed away Tuesday, July 20, 2021 at her home.

Sally was born on March 31, 1947 in Clearfield, Pennsylvania to the late Leroy Hamilton & Mary Irene Cederholm Sawyer. She retired with over 20 years as a bookkeeper for numerous car dealerships and other companies. After retirement she was a loving caregiver to her mother. Sally loved to decorate for Halloween and Christmas. She loved her figurines, feeding the hummingbirds and especially her beloved dog, CC. She was a Christian.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a son, Thomas E. McGrath,Jr.; brothers, Kenneth Sawyer and Donald Sawyer.

Survivors include her husband of 38 years, Mike Stokes; daughter, Susan (David) Beard; granddaughter, Taegen Beard; and her floral squarebeloved dog, CC.

Sally’s remains will be cremated and no services are planned at this time.

Obituary for William Kenneth Slate

William Kenneth Slate, 94, of Springfield, passed away on Saturday July 17, 2021, at his home. Graveside services will be conducted Thursday July 22nd at 11:00 a.m. in the Spring Hill Cemetery on Gallatin Rd. in Nashville with Brother Marvin Crouch and Brother Johnny Trail officiating. Pallbearers will be Toby Slate, Dakota Slate, Ty Slate, Tuff Slate, Cody Smith, Andrew Smith, Phillip Jason McDougal, and John McDougal, Jr. There will be no public visitation prior to the graveside service on Thursday.

Mr. Slate was born August 5, 1926, in Red Boiling Springs to the late Dudley Cordell and Myrtle Newberry Slate. He was a WWII veteran, having served in the U.S. Army. Mr. Slate was a retired plumber and was a longtime member of Hillcrest Church of Christ. He loved anything that allowed him to be outdoors, especially camping, fishing, and boating, and he was always finding something that needed repairing or sprucing up a touch. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brothers: Glendle and Charlie Slate, and by his son-in-law: Randy Berry.

Mr. Slate is survived by his wife of 74 years, Jean Roberts Slate of Springfield, by his daughters and sons-in-law: Jean Berry of Springfield, Shirley Irene and John McDougal of Greenbrier, Bonita and Stan Lillie of Huntsville, AL, by his son and daughter-in-law: Philip and Diana Slate of Springfield, by his grandchildren: Elizabeth Smith, John McDougal, Jr., Jason McDougal, Toby Slate, Tabitha Carter, Jana Barrier, Amanda Miller, Ryan Berry, and floral squareJayme Berry, and by his 13 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

William Maydell Johnson, known by many as “Bill” or “Willie”, age 94 of Pleasant View, Tennessee, passed away Sunday, July 18, 2021 at his home.

Funeral services will be conducted at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Pleasant View at 1:00PM on Friday, July 23rd, with his daughter, Rev. Donna LaRue Johnson officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant View United Methodist Church Cemetery with Michael Wayne Dunn, William Ray Dunn, Ronnie Balthrop, Arnold Allen, and Wayne Head serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday from 4-8PM and again on Friday from 11:00AM until the hour of service at 1:00PM.

Mr. Johnson was born on November 29, 1926 in Cheatham County, Tennessee to the late Turner & Emma Johnson. He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving during WWII. He was retired after 25 years with Genesco, also working for Acme Boot and most recently retiring for health reasons at Tony’s Foodland as the breadman. Mr. Johnson loved to work in his garden and loved to go dancing at the Senior Citizen Center. He was a Christian.

In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by the mother of his children, Nancy Sue Hinkle; daughters, Nancy Kay Milburn, Jackie Grace Searles; and five brothers & sisters.

Obituary for James Donald Broadrick

Age 70 of White House passed away Sunday, July 18, 2021 at his home. He was born November 2, 1950 in Portland, TN to Hubert & Virginia Rebecca Bailey Broadrick. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and was a member of Tri County Baptist Church. Donnie enjoyed spending time outdoors, fishing, operating heavy equipment, watching football, especially the Titans, watching westerns on tv and just kicking back and listening to music. Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren.

He is preceded in death by his parents; grandson, Bobby Broadrick. He is survived by his sons, Jonathan (Sherry Cokeley) Broadrick and James Brian Broadrick; daughter, Tammy Lynn Coffin; brothers, Dale (Cheryl) Broadrick and Ricky (Corinna) Broadrick, all of White House, TN; 6 grandchildren, Bobby, Iliganoa, Chase, Maddie, Makana and Lillian.

Obituary for Walter Edward “Ed” Gibbs

Walter Edward “Ed” Gibbs, 63, of Cottontown, passed away on Tuesday July 13, 2021, at NorthCrest Health.

A Celebration of Life service was conducted Saturday July 17th at 3:00 p.m. in the Oakhurst Chapel of the Robertson County Funeral Home with Pastor Robert Gardner and Tim Harris officiating. The family received friends on Saturday from 1:00 p.m. until 3:00 p.m. at the funeral home.

Ed was born May 19, 1958, in Springfield, to the late Carl and Ann Catherine Ellis Gibbs. He was a graduate of Springfield High School Class of 1977. Ed worked as a store manager with Yankee Candle Company, and he attended City of Faith Church in Springfield. He collected Fiesta Ware, loved traveling, cooking, gardening, and flowers. Ed loved his family and friends, especially spending time with them and cooking for them. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his husband: Scott Bowers and by his brother-in-law: Bubba Gezley.

Obituary for James Oscar Applewhite

Age 76 of White House went home to be with the Lord Monday, June 21, 2021 at his home. He was born October 7, 1944 in Athens, GA to James Oscar Applewhite, II and Miriam Beckwith Applewhite. He worked as a civil engineer for TVA until his retirement. Mr. Applewhite proudly served his country in the U.S. Air Force during Vietnam and was a member of First Presbyterian Church of Hendersonville.

He is preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his wife of 53 years, Lynda Applewhite, White House, TN; son, Kevin (Sarah) Applewhite, Belmont, Massachusetts; daughter, Kelly (Tim) Amyx, White House, TN; brother, Gary (Janice) Applewhite, Salisbury, NC; sister, Ann (John) Clifford, Newport News, VA; 2 grandchildren, Ryan Applewhite and Jason Applewhite.

After marrying her husband, she cared for his children like her own and was a very loving mother.

He worked as a customer service manager for Surface Koatings and was a member of White House First United Methodist Church. He was an amazing husband, father and grandfather and son. Mr. Colley enjoyed spending time outdoors and was an avid hunter.

Janice Rebecca Moore, age 63 of Clarksville, Tennessee, died Thursday, July 15, 2021 at her home.

Funeral services will be conducted at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Pleasant View on Monday, July 19, 2021 at 4:00PM with Bro. James Hayes officiating. Her grandsons, Dwayne Brown, Jr., Alex Brown, and Sarah Brown will serve as honorary pallbearers. Her remains will be cremated following the funeral service.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday, July 18th from 2-6PM and again on Monday from 2:00PM until the hour of service at 4:00PM.

Janice was born on August 17, 1957 in Nashville, Tennessee to the late J.B. & Bertha Newland Chandler. She owned her own cleaning business and was a long time Cheatham County bus driver. She was a Christian.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a daughter, Tanya Moore; brothers, John “Pat” Chandler and Robert “Mac” Chandler; and a sister, Annette Harris.

Mary Elizabeth Hill, age 88 of Pleasant View, Tennessee, passed away Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at her home.

Funeral services will be conducted at Austin & Bell Funeral Home in Pleasant View at 11:00AM on Monday, July 19th, with Bro. Billy Ellis officiating and James Thomas Walker sharing memories. Burial will follow at EverRest of Cheatham with Baron Cutts, James Thomas Walker, Shane Staggs, Larry Whitworth, Kurt Heber, and Ron Balthrop serving as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday from 2-5PM and again on Monday from 10AM until the hour of service at 11:00AM.

Mrs. Hill was born on January 24, 1933 in Neelyville, Missouri to the late Oscar & Dora Spitzig West. She had worked for Washington County Hospital in Chipley, Florida and Winfield Hospital in Alabama as a nursing assistant, and also a teaching assistant in Camilla, Georgia for 10 years. Most importantly, she was a pastor’s wife for 65 years. She loved her family and her grandchildren dearly. Mrs. Hill always loved giving and receiving hugs. She was a member of Heads Free Will Baptist Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by her husband, Rev. Bud Hill; brother, Clifford West; and granddaughter, Brittney Menerey.

Survivors include her son, Paul (Elaine) Hill; daughter, Celecia (Baron) Cutts; brothers, Ray (Pat) West, Jim (Virginia) West, Glenn (Bessie) West, Gary (Martha) West, Lonnie West, Donnie West; sisters, Geneva “Weed” (Dick) Geffers, Shirley (Jerry) Sullivan; grandchildren, Cara Rausch, Cayla (Shane) Staggs, Lauren (Benjamin) Alday; and great-grandchildren, RJ Rausch, AJ floral squareMenerey, Bayley Thomas, and Coltyn Thomas.

Obituary for Billy Gene Deen

Age 81 of Cross Plains passed away Monday, July 12, 2021 at his home. He was born August 12, 1939 in Blue Mountain, Mississippi to Willie Franklin & Mary Emma Gibson Deen. He worked as a forklift operator for Sears before his retirement. He proudly served his country in the U.S. Marines and was of the Baptist faith. Mr. Deen enjoyed raising a garden, cutting his grass, spending time outdoors and tinkering in his workshop.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Bobby Deen; sister, Mary Elizabeth DiGiacomo. He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Minerva Ann Deen, Cross Plains, TN; daughters, Paula (John) Bastian, Cross Plains, TN and Tori (James) Harper, Jackson, TN; brother, John P. (Pat) Deen, Northwood, Iowa; 8 grandchildren, Caleb, Cody, Laura, Rachel, Nathan, Amanda, Paige and Christian; 6 great-grandchildren with another one on the way.
