Springfield Approves Installation of License Plate Reader Cameras
SPRINGFIELD, TENNESSEE: Smokey Barn News) – During the October Board of Mayor and Alderman meeting, the City of Springfield approved a contract with Flock Safety Inc., an Atlanta-based company, to install six license plate reader cameras (LPR) across the city. The decision followed a motion by Alderman Trotter, seconded by Alderman Gregg, and was supported unanimously in a 7-0 vote.
City Manager Ryan Martin emphasized that these license plate readers are part of Springfield’s strategic plan to enhance public safety. “This is something that we’ve talked about extensively, particularly in our strategic planning,” Martin said. He clarified that the devices are not intended for traffic enforcement, such as issuing speeding tickets or tracking minor violations. Instead, the primary focus is on aiding law enforcement with serious situations, including Amber Alerts, stolen vehicles, Silver Alerts, and property crime investigations.
According to Martin, the city previously tested one of these devices earlier in the year, and this contract marks the next step in expanding the technology’s use. The license plate readers will allow authorities to track the direction of vehicles involved in criminal activities, making it easier to find missing persons and solve property crimes.
Martin expressed appreciation for the work of Springfield Police Chief Head and his team, who thoroughly researched and vetted various options before recommending this solution to the Board. The technology is already used in many parts of Tennessee.
With the approval, Springfield joins a growing number of cities using license plate reading technology to enhance safety and support investigations. The city hopes this new tool will contribute to a safer community for residents.
