TUESDAY 2:30 PM
Chet Thompson of White House sent us photographs of an unusual moth, so we looked it up.
The Mournful Sphinx (Enyo lugubris) is a moth species found across parts of North, Central, and South America, including Tennessee. It’s known for its distinct dark brown and gray coloration, resembling dried leaves, which helps it blend into its surroundings. The moth has a wingspan of about 2.5 to 3 inches and is most active during twilight or at night. The Mournful Sphinx is often seen feeding on nectar from flowers, using its long proboscis. Its larvae typically feed on grapevines and members of the Vitaceae family. Despite its name, the Mournful Sphinx is not harmful to humans or pets.
