Weather Service Goes Head To Head With Punxsutawney Phil

ROBERTSON COUNTY MIDDLE TENNESSEE: (Smokey Barn News) – The word is out, Punxsutawney Phil has seen his shadow, therefore predicting six more weeks of winter but in an unusual move, the US National Weather Service in Nashville has decided to go head-to-head with the time tested furry prognosticator.

This was no water cooler or backroom prediction. In a bold public maneuver, the National Weather Service in Nashville released the following statement on Thursday afternoon. “Punxsutawney Phil might be “predicting” another 6 weeks of winter, but the Climate Prediction Center says otherwise.” Placing the word “predicting” in quotes might be interpreted as another dig on Phil’s validity in 2023.

It would seem that the National Weather Service has decided to rely more on their highly sophisticated weather modeling computer software prediction tools making them the first to publically step away from trusting the science of the Groundhog.  Dating back to 1886, Punxsutawney Phil has been right about 40% of the time over the last 10 years, according to data from NOAA.

As AI and computers take over more and more of our lives it would seem that Punxsutawney Phil will soon be replaced by an APP on our watches.

With a fair degree of confidence, the National Weather Service in Nashville went even further by laying out the specifics of “their” weather prediction.

“The 6-10 day outlook favors above normal temperatures for Middle Tennessee, and also above normal precipitation. Ditto for the 8-14 day outlook. Ditto for the monthly outlook for February. Despite a bone-chilling Groundhog Day (and Groundhog Night), my only thought when looking at those warmer temperatures is “I got you, babe.” (By the way, can any of you spell “Punxsutawney” without looking it up? I’ve never been able to.)”

As computers “chip” away at controlling more and more of our lives, a quote from an expert on the topic of computers taking over the world comes to mind. “Get to the chopper!!” Arnold Schwarzenegger

PS: Yes Robertson County has Groundhogs! Below is a video of one captured on video near downtown Springfield back in 2012. He was not available for comment regarding the National Weather Service.
